There will be a strong contingent of Iowa Hawkeye wrestlers and recruits competing this weekend. The UWW Cadet and University Nationals will be held starting on Thursday, June 2nd and concluding on Sunday. Cadets will be trying to earn a spot on Team USA to compete at the 2016 UWW Cadet Worlds to be held in Tbilisi, Georgia on September 13th-18th.
The winner of the University tournament will qualify for the 2016 World University Championships that will be in Corum, Turkey, October 25th-30th. All of the action will take place at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Field House on the campus of the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.
The Hawkeyes will be sending three All Americans to compete. Brandon Sorensen, a sophomore and two-time All American and NCAA Runner-Up will be competing. Also All-Americans Sammy Brooks and Alex Meyer, who both garnered All-American status this past season, will be competing. Brooks and Meyer just completed their junior season.
There will be a very deep squad of our young wrestlers, especially those that just finished their redshirt freshman season. I do not recall this many Iowa Wrestlers competing in University Nationals in the recent past.
Iowa committed recruit Jason Renteria will be competing in both Cadet Freestyle and Greco-Roman at 58kg.
There will also be at least two uncommitted big recruits competing in the Cadet tournament. I recently interviewed Jacob Warner of Washington, IL and Max Murin of the Young Guns Wrestling Club in Pennsylvania and they will be competing in the Cadet Freestyle. I am sure there will be plenty more recruits competing, but those are the two that I do know that Iowa is heavily recruiting at this time.
Also, special mention that Class of 2018 mega-recruit Gable Steveson of Minnesota will be competing. I am a big fan of this guy because he is one tough wrestler. And what a first name. Steveson won a Cadet World title last summer. This guy is the real deal.
Greco-Roman for both Cadet and University will be held on Friday, June 3rd. Freestyle competition for Cadets and University begins at 8AM CST on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday.
The weights for University will be 57kg, 61kg, 65kg, 70kg, 74kg, 80kg, 86kg, 97kg, and 125kg.
The weights for Cadets will be 42kg, 46kg, 50kg, 54kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 76kg, 85kg, and 100kg.
I do not what weight the Iowa wrestlers will be competing at. I will post as soon as I find out.
This will be a very exciting weekend of wrestling for Iowa Wrestling fans.
