Iowa Wrestling recruits Spencer Lee and Gavin Teasdale won titles at the prestigious Powerade tournament in Canonsburg, PA.  The Powerade is known as the toughest tournament in Pennsylvania every year.  Lee, from Franklin Regional High School (Murrysville, PA) won the title at 126 lbs. with a 9-0 Major Decision over Jack Davis of Wyoming Seminary.  The match was not as close as the score may indicate because Lee did all of the offensive moves in the match.  Lee cruised to the finals with three Falls in :20, :47, and 3:34 before scoring a 15-0 Tech Fall in the semifinals.  Lee is the headliner in the Iowa Wrestling Recruiting Class of 2017 and is a three-time defending Freestyle World Champion.

Teasdale, from Jefferson-Morgan, PA, won the Powerade title at 120 lbs. with a 10-4 decision over Logan Marci of Canon-Mac.  Teasdale pushed the pace and is always looking to score and had control of the match.  Teasdale recorded two Falls, a 12-6 decision in the quarterfinals, and an 18-8 Major Decision in the semifinals.   I am more impressed with Teasdale every time I see him. This guy can score from anywhere on his feet.  Hawkeye fans are going to really like this guy in the Black and Gold.  Teasdale is currently ranked as the top wrestler in the country at 120 lbs. Teasdale is a junior and is the current headliner in the Iowa Wrestling Recruiting Class of 2018.

What great exposure for Iowa Wrestling to have two of their recruits on the advertisement for FloWrestling’s coverage of the Powerade.  That is great advertising for the Hawks that is earned by getting commitments from Lee and Teasdale as well as the success of Michael Kemerer, a former high school teammate of Spencer Lee, and Kaleb Young of Punxsutawney, PA.  Add in Max Murin to this group, also in the Recruiting Class of 2017, and all of these blue chip recruits are from the Young Guns Wrestling Club that is ran by former Iowa All-American Jody Strittmatter.  That is a great connection that is going to give us Iowa Wrestling fans a lot to cheer about.  With Kemerer winning a Midlands title, Young looked good in beating the eighth ranked wrestler in the country on his way to placing at Midlands, and Lee and Teasdale dominating at a very tough tournament, it was a great two-day run for the Young Guns – Iowa Wrestling connection.  The Young Guns – Iowa Wrestling connection is going to give us Iowa Wrestling fans a lot of great memories in the coming years.  This is just the beginning, but I am definitely excited about the future.
