carver-full-houseI am sure a lot of us have great memories of the Iowa-Iowa State dual meets over the years.  Let’s make some new memories.  Iowa and Iowa State square off at 7PM CST on Saturday night.  I just contacted the ticket office and there are over 10,000 tickets sold as of 10:30 AM Friday.  There are 4,900 tickets available.  I say we fill it up!

Up until recently with the growth of the Big Ten and the addition of the Big Ten Network, Iowa had home dual meets on Saturday night, not Friday night and Sunday afternoon. This is our first Saturday night home dual meet in years AND it just happens to be against Iowa State. What more could you want?  Christmas came early for us rabid Iowa Wrestling fans, especially for those of us from Iowa.

The Dan Gable Traveling Trophy is on the line for the winner of this dual meet.  Gable wrestled for Iowa State and he was our assistant and then head coach at Iowa.  That, and he is Gable.  Iowa is 6-0 all time in this series.  I do not trust myself on describing the importance of the Dan Gable Traveling Trophy remaining in the confines of Carver Hawkeye Arena.  Let’s just say I am ready for the meet.

If all of this is not enough, the Iowa-Iowa State dual meet is also an Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series event.  This is the annual event where score is kept between Iowa and Iowa State sports matchups with the overall winner receiving a trophy for winning the year long battle.  There was a tie last year for the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk title and Iowa State has a 6-5-1 overall advantage in the event. Iowa has pulled two upsets this week with both the men and women basketball teams winning to give Iowa a slight lead in the series.

Upsets are in the air in this series with the the basketball games, but the Hawks are on a roll at home in Carver Hawkeye Arena.  Let’s get out there and cheer on the Hawks in person.  If needed, you will have time to go right from a high school or kids tournament.  Let’s pack the house!

For a lifelong Iowan, it does not get any better than this.

You can do your part by reposting this blog on your Facebook or Twitter account.  You can cheer on the Hawks wherever you are on Big Ten Plus and also listen to the meet on 800 AM on KXIC and also through Hawkeye All-Access that can be found at www.hawkeyesports.com.  You want to be a part of this.

As always, it is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Go Hawks!!!
