Iowa Wrestling recruits Jacob Warner and Anthony Cassioppi made it a “Fargo Sweep” by winning Greco-Roman National titles.  Warner and Cassioppi also won national titles in Freestyle on Tuesday.  Myles Wilson placed fourth at 182 lbs. and Aaron Costello did not place at Hwt.

Warner, from Washington, IL,  was never tested in capturing the Greco-Roman title at 195 lbs. Warner defeated Dalton Hahn of Wisconsin by tech fall in the finals,12-0, in just 2:16.  In the twelve total matches in Freestyle and Greco-Roman, Warner was 12-0 and did not wrestle an entire match as all were won by fall or tech fall.  That is domination.

This completes a very successful high school career for Warner.  He also won both the Freestyle and Greco-Roman titles in the Cadet division at 170 lbs. In 2015.  Last fall, Warner won a bronze medal at the 2016 World Cadet Freestyle Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia.  Rated as the top 195 lbs. wrestler in the country, Warner is a member of the Iowa Wrestling Recruiting Class of 2017 that is ranked as the best in the country.

Cassioppi, from Roscoe, IL, saved the best for last as he once again faced Brandon Metz of North Dakota, the defending national champion, in the Greco-Roman finals at Hwt.  Cassioppi defeated Metz for the Freestyle title, 4-1.  Down 2-3 with time running out, Cassioppi scored three points on a throw for the win.  An appeal was denied and Cassioppi was the victor.  For his efforts, Cassioppi was named as the Outstanding Wrestler (OW) of the tournament.

Just a junior, Cassioppi also won the rare “Triple Crown” by winning Folkstyle Nationals before this week’s titles in Freestyle and Greco-Roman.  This is a very impressive accomplishment. Cassioppi announced on July 4th that he was decommitting from Northwestern and committing to the University of Iowa.  Iowa Wrestling fans are going to love this guy in the black and gold. Cassioppi is a member of the Iowa Wrestling Recruiting Class of 2018 that also includes Nelson Brands of Iowa City, Iowa.

I was impressed with Myles Wilson (New Castle, CO) as he placed sixth in Freestyle and fourth in Greco-Roman at 182 lbs.  This guy is a rugged built athlete and tough wrestler that is coming in a little under the radar for national attention.  If Wilson is a diamond in the rough, he shined pretty good this past week with All American honors in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman.  It will be interesting to see what just one year in the legendary Iowa Wrestling room will do for the development of Myles Wilson.

Iowa Wrestling fans, we have some serious hand-fighters making their way to the Iowa Wrestling room.  They also know how to not only turn, but to pin as well.

I keep saying this, but it is so true.  It is impossible to not get excited about the future of Iowa Wrestling because it looks so great.

It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.
