I made it to my first Iowa Wrestling Media Day.  I showed up excited about Iowa Wrestling and left even more excited.  Iowa head coach Tom Brands had a press conference in the big room right by the Ticket Office in Carver.  It was a who’s who of press for wrestling locally and nationally with cameras and recorders catching every word for TV stations, newspapers, wrestling publications, and websites.  Iowa Wrestling is a big deal.

In no particular order, a few comments from Coach Brands:

  1. We will see Spencer Lee compete at Midlands and they will go from there. Brands mentioned several time how special Lee is.  I interpreted it as we will see Spencer Lee this season if at all possible.  That is off the charts great news for Iowa Wrestling fans.
  2. Coach Brands went into some detail about a location of a new facility.  I believe they are starting with the premise of building the new facility right on to Carver Hawkeye and going from there.  It is great news to hear that this is indeed going to happen.

The Greatest Wrestling Training Facility…in the WORLD!!!!!!!

  1. When asked about recruiting, Coach Brands spoke of the great job that Ryan Morningstar has done and how they have changed their approach to recruiting.  Today’s wrestler has changed and Iowa Wrestling has adapted.
  2. Brands went down the lineup of the Recruiting Class of 2017 about how they do not need to be told to get to work.  Even though Brands said he wasn’t into predictions, he was looking for a great career out of that class.
  3. There was mention of the negative recruiting against Iowa in the recruiting wars about being robots and not having fun.  Brands was specific about the amount of negative recruiting Iowa received in the recruiting battle for Spencer Lee.

The Iowa wrestlers were available in the wrestling room for interviews.  I was able to get quite a few interviews that I will be releasing in the next two weeks.

I need to mention that I talked to Wyatt Schultz of The Predicament.  Wyatt is a great guy that I have know through the media for years now.  Always good to see him. Support The Predicament.

Overall, a great crowd to be apart of and a neat experience.  Well done by the University of Iowa Sports Information department.

As I mentioned earlier, I will be releasing interviews of Iowa wrestlers soon.
