Former Iowa All-American wrestler John Heffernan has been named as the new head coach at St. Edward’s High School in Lakewood, OH.  Greg Urbas has stepped down as head coach and will remain as a member of the wrestling program and faculty.

From the St. Edwards press release about Coach Urbas:

Under his leadership, St. Edward teams won 4 national championships, 24 state championships, 25 district championships and 29 sectional championships. He has coached 76 individual state champions. Urbas has also put his stamp on an unprecedented and unmatched streak of St. Edward High School producing at least one NCAA All-American wrestler in each of the past 35 years.

Heffernan has been an assistant coach at St. Ed’s for the past 27 years.  As a prep at St. Ed’s Heffernan won a state title in 1984. Just two weeks ago Heffernan was named as the NWCA Assistant Coach of the Year.  At the University of Iowa, Heffernan wrestled for Dan Gable where he was a two-time All-American (1987-’88) at 158 lbs.

I have known John “Heff” Heffernan for over 30 years.  He is a great guy and I expect St. Ed’s to continue to be a national power.

Good luck in your new position Heff.
