Incoming Iowa Wrestling recruits had a great weekend of competition.  All three recruits that entered the tough Minnesota Christmas Tournament won titles.  Zach Glazier stormed to the finals with two falls and two tech falls. In the finals, Glazier defeat #1 ranked Cade King of Owatonna, 3-2.  Glazier is currently ranked behind King at #2 at 182 in Minnesota 3A.

Patrick Kennedy was lights out in winning the title at 170 in the Minnesota Christmas Tournament.  Kennedy won his first three matches by tech fall before scoring a 15-1 Major Decision in the Quarterfinals.  Kennedy won in the semifinals by Tech Fall. In the finals, Kennedy defeated AA #2 ranked Cade Mueller of Waconia by a 19-4 Tech Fall.  To TF the #2 ranked wrestler in a state as tough as Minnesota is worth noting. Kennedy is currently ranked #1 at 182 in Minnesota AA but won the title today at 170.

I thought this tournament would be a proving ground for Ryan Sokol.  Sokol had a great tournament winning the title at 132 lbs. Sokol started the tournament off with a Fall and three Tech Falls.  In the semifinals, Sokol downed #1 in Minnesota AA Mitchell Peterson of Byron, 7-3. In the finals, Sokol won by a 20-5 Tech Fall over Noah Villarreal of Aurora Christian. Villarreal is ranked #1 in Illinois 1A by Illinois Matmen. To defeat two number one ranked wrestlers including by a tech fall in the finals, I would say Sokol had himself a day.

Cullan Schriever was 4-0 with two falls, a tech fall, and a major decision at the Battle of Waterloo.  Colby Schriever was 4-1 with two falls, a tech fall and a major decision. Abe Assad had dual meets on Friday and Saturday where he was 3-0 with three first period pins. Jesse Ybarra did not have any competition this weekend.  On Wednesday night, Ybarra had a Fall over Stafford and a 5-2 decision over Walden Grove.

That was a great weekend of wrestling by our recruits.  Glazier beating a #1 ranked wrestler, Kennedy getting a tech fall over the #2 ranked wrestler at his weight, and Sokol defeating two #1 ranked wrestlers including by a tech fall in the finals is definitely a strong showing by the recruits at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament. Simley (Sokol’s team) won the team title with 204.5 and Kasson-Mantorville (Kennedy’s team) placed second with 199.5.
