The Hawkeye Wrestling Club will be going into battle this weekend at the U.S. Open. The action will take place at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 25-27. All of the action will be streamed live by FloWrestling.
The women will take the mat on Thursday and Friday. The HWC will have three wrestlers ranked #1 in Forest Molinari, Alli Ragan,and Kayla Miracle. Miracle is a defending U.S. Open champion at 62 kg. Molinari (65kg) and Louive (59 kg) placed second last year. Michaela Beck is not competing at the Open, but she will be at the Junior World Team Trials in Dallas, TX on May 10.
Thomas Gilman will be looking to win his first U.S. Open title. Gilman went through the qualifying tournament to qualify for the 2017 World Team Trials that he won and then went on to win a World Silver. Last year Gilman automatically qualified for the Final X at 57 kg because he was a defending World medalist. I am expecting Gilman to add a U.S. Open title to his resume.
Brandon Sorensen (70 kg) medaled in all five International tournaments that he has entered the following year and has looked very good. Cory Clark (60 kg) has yet to break out in International wrestling and this would be a great opportunity for him to have a solid tournament. Sammy Brooks is the pre-seed #1 at 86 kg.
Paul Glynn (60 kg) and Jeren Glosser (70 kg) of the University of Iowa will also be competing in the Open.
