The much anticipated 2020 season for Iowa Wrestling got off to a big start this past weekend.  The Hawks had wrestlers competing at two tournaments on Saturday before the varsity kicked off the season with a home dual meet on Sunday.  The Hawkeye Wrestling Club was competing in Japan and New York City over the weekend as well.

It is time for a recap of all the action:

At the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa the Hawks had four champs with Aaron Cashman(125), Carter Happel(141), Vince Turk(149), and Cash Wilcke(184). It was the Iowa Hawkeye debut for transfer Gavin Teasdale who placed third at 133.

At the Grand View Open in Des Moines Iowa the Hawks had three champs with Zach Glazier(197), Justin Stickley(141) and Zach Axmear(149).

For the HWC, Forrest Molinari competed at 65kg at the 18th Annual Women’s Wrestling World Cup in Nanta, Japan.  Molinari won her match and Team USA won dual meets against Russia and Mongolia. In the finals Molinari dropped a 5-1 match and Team USA was defeated 7-3 by Japan.  Cory Clark dropped a first round match at 57kg and was eliminated at the Bill Farrell Memorial International Open in New York City.

Iowa shutout Tennessee-Chattanooga 39-0 to start the season.  Redshirt freshman Tony Cassioppi made his college debut for the home fans with a fall in 1:45 at Hwt.  Michael Kemerer made his much anticipated return to the lineup after missing last season with an injury.  Kemerer looked at least as good as ever and won with a 20-0 tech fall at 174. Austin DeSanto also won by a 23-4 tech fall at 141. Spencer Lee and Kaleb Young won by a major decision.  It was also the debut for redshirt freshman Nelson Brands in front of the hometown crowd. Brands had the most exciting match of the day with an 8-4 decision at 184 over #21 Matthew Waddell of UTC.

A great crowd of 10,466 showed up to get a first look at the 2020 edition of Iowa Wrestling.

The Hawks compete next at Iowa State on Sunday, November 24 at 2 PM.  Iowa returns home to legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday, December 1 with a Big Ten opener against #4 ranked Wisconsin at 7PM.
