Tony Cassioppi has been named as the Iowa Wrestling Fan Blog & Podcast Wrestler of the Week.  Cassioppi, ranked #12,  looked great in defeating #2 ranked Trent Hillger of Wisconsin, 3-2. Hillger was an All American last season and had recently jumped up in the rankings.  Cassioppi is a redshirt freshman from Roscoe, IL (Hononegah HS).

Cassioppi was able to convert on a shot for the only takedown of the match.  That is a great signature win for Cassioppi in only his third college match.  The rest of the country now knows how good Tony Cassioppi is.

It was a challenging decision with #2 ranked Austin DeSanto defeating #1 ranked Seth Gross 6-2 in the same Wisconsin dual meet.  However, I picked DeSanto to win that match and the national title this season. I had the Cassioppi-Hillger match as a toss up. I do not see it as an upset when DeSanto beats anyone in the country.

The criteria for Iowa Wrestling Fan Blog & Podcast Wrestler of the Week is an Iowa wrestler that performs at an elite level that best represents Iowa Wrestling in the form of a dominating performance, a come from behind victory, or defeating a higher ranked opponent.
