There are not a lot of changes to the rankings this week. TrackWrestling, InterMat, and WIN Magazine all released their rankings in the last 24 hours. #1 Iowa still has a sizable lead over #2 Penn State in all three rankings. As an Iowa Wrestling fan I would sure take the projected point totals at Nationals, but I believe the gap is closer than that.
Ohio State is third in all three rankings and are close to Penn State by Track and InterMat. What would make ranking the team race is the difference between dual meets and the NCAA National Tournament. These publications have their work cut out for them in always making that distinction.
As I have been saying all season, I feel as though the rankings are fair for Iowa Wrestling. An estimated average of the three rankings would have Iowa with:
1 – 3 – 8 – 2 – 4 – 2 – 1 – 9 – 5 – 3
When you look at it that way I can see the gap between Iowa and Penn State and the rest of the country. I will feel better when Iowa has their full lineup on the mat healthy and ready to go. That may not happen until Big Tens.
Iowa closes out the season with home dual meets this Saturday, February 15 against #5 Minnesota and Sunday, February 23 against #9 Oklahoma State. The biggest dual meet of the week will be #3 Ohio State at #2 Penn State on Saturday. That dual meet could shake up the rankings next week.
