Incoming Iowa recruit Jesse Ybarra won his third state title at the AIA State Championships in Prescott Valley, Arizona.  Ybarra had a fall in :33, 1:24, and 3:06 before defeating Noah Wasserbeck of Campo Verde by a 16-3 major decision in the finals to win the D2 title at 126 lbs.

Ybarra, 37-0 on the season, led the way for Sunnyside who won their 33rd team state title.  Sunnyside scored the third most points in state history with 277.5 points, 101.5 more points than the second place team with six state champions, two seconds, two thirds, and a fifth place.

By MatScouts (Willie Saylor), Ybarra is ranked #16 in the P4P (pound for pound) ranking for recruits overall and #5 at 126 lbs.  Ybarra committed to Iowa on September 27, 2018 and is a member of the outstanding Iowa Wrestling Recruiting Class of 2020.

I believe Ybarra will flourish in the Iowa program and has a great future at 125/133. After using a redshirt next season I see Ybarra replacing Spencer Lee at 125 in the starting lineup for the Hawks for the 2022 season.

Champ. Round 1 – Jesse Ybarra (Sunnyside) won by fall over James Garritano (Willow Canyon) (Fall 0:33)

Quarterfinal – Jesse Ybarra (Sunnyside) won by fall over Ethan Pullifrone (Cactus Shadows) (Fall 1:24)

Semifinal – Jesse Ybarra (Sunnyside) won by fall over Xylyx Abele (Casteel) (Fall 3:06)

1st Place Match – Jesse Ybarra (Sunnyside) won by major decision over Noah Wasserbeck (Campo Verde) (MD 16-3)

It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Go Hawks!
