Today marks the end of the regular season for D-I college wrestling. Iowa is at Nebraska at 6 PM on BTN. This should be a real good dual meet to end the season on.

I researched when the NCAA would release allocations for the National Tournament from each of the Conference/NCAA Qualifying tournaments.

From ncaa.com:

“The release of pre-allocated spots by qualifying tournament will be Thursday, February 24. RPI and coach rank will be released as well. ”

New rules and guidelines have been in place over the recent years that can be a challenge to follow. The recent trend of having arranged matches against teammates or even opposing teams to get the eight necessary matches required to get a pre-allocated spot is embarrassing and a joke. The match is basically fixed where the “Opponents” shake hands and then do an immediate 0:01 medical forfeit just to get someone a win for NCAA qualifying purposes. This has been happening all across the country in D-I wrestling and I find it to be flat out wrong.

From ncaa.com:

“Wrestler must have a minimum of 8 Division I Matches at
the designated weight class to receive a pre-allocated spot.”

I am glad that Iowa Wrestling does not participate in these fixed matches. If this is a loophole in the rules then it needs to be closed ASAP. These 0:01 fixed forfeit matches are not what you want to see from the greatest sport of wrestling.

The Big Ten always has the most qualifying allocations in the country and for good reason. The Big Ten is by far the toughest conference with the top three ranked teams in the entire country.

I will keep you up to date when the NCAA releases the allocations on Thursday.

Sat/Sun March 5-6 at Big Tens (Lincoln, Nebraska)

Th-Sat, March 17-19  at NCAA National Tournament (Detroit, Michigan)

It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Go Hawks!
