HWC Social and H.A.W.K. Party on Friday

There will be a Hawkeye Wrestling Club Social Friday beginning at 5 PM at Joe’s Place in Iowa City. Joe’s Place is at 115 Iowa Avenue in downtown Iowa City.

There will be drink specials, raffles, and members of the HWC. The meet will be shown on big screens for those that are unable to obtain a ticket to the sold out meet.

#2 Iowa will face #1 Penn State at 8 PM in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Following the meet there will be a H.A.W.K. Party at the Coralville Radisson in the Kinnick Room. The Coralville Radison is located at 1220 1st Avenue just North of I-80 at Exit 242.

The Hawkeye Area Wrestling Klub (H.A.W.K.) began in 1978 and is the oldest college wrestling fan support organization in the country. Attending a H.A.W.K. Party is a big part of the Iowa Wrestling experience for a big dual meet. I have great memories of attending these parties over the years.

I have no doubt that Iowa City will be buzzing with excitement for this big #1 vs. #2 dual meet that is the elite event of the entire college wrestling regular season.

It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

It’s Penn State week

When the Iowa Wrestling schedule came out I am sure that a lot of Hawkeye fans immediately scanned through the schedule looking for the Penn State dual meet. I know I sure did. I have no doubt that this dual meet was a big contributing factor in Iowa selling over 14,000 season tickets by November. I am still in awe of that. Fans paid $85 for a season ticket and this may be the only dual meet they go to. It is that big.

With the Iowa-Penn State dual meet this Friday at 8 PM inside legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena, it is officially Penn State week.

I am expecting a huge build up for this dual meet from the local and national media and wrestling fans as well. The way that Penn State and Iowa looked this weekend will only add to the build up. Simply put Penn State looked great and Iowa did not. That fueled a lot of talk by the fans about how it looks as though Penn State may not only beat Iowa, but handily. Will Iowa win two matches, maybe three?

In the biggest dual meet of the year so far Penn State went into #3 ranked Michigan and dominated the Wolverines 29-6 on Friday. Penn State won eight of ten matches including the final five from 165-Hwt. Every one of those five matches were decided by 1 or 2 points in low scoring bouts.

I say let the games begin for the buildup of this Iowa-Penn State dual meet. Let’s get millions of people watching this meet on BTN around the country and world. For a few hours the attention and focus of not only wrestling fans but the sports world will be focused on what is going on in a wrestling dual meet in Iowa City, Iowa, USA.  Sounds good to me.

I have no doubt that tickets will be scarce. Will this be the highest priced dual meet ticket ever for scalpers? I would say there is a chance.

So whether you are lucky enough to be one of the 15,000 fans inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday night at 8 PM CST or watching on TV I am expecting a huge audience.

My, how quickly Iowa went from being the #1 team in the country to a big underdog at home for a dual meet while remaining undefeated. That didn’t take long.

Iowa Wrestling is my entertainment and I plan on being entertained Friday night.

Let’s get ‘em in the middle.

It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Iowa recruits in action: Jan 21-22

This will be a big weekend of competition for our incoming recruits as the regular season begins to wind down. Jesuroga, Jesuroga, Martinson, Martinson, and Hill will all be at the Ed Winger Invitational in Urbandale. This has been one of the top tournaments in Iowa for years. Ed Winger was “The Voice” of the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament for decades who had the famous line:

“Wrestlers, clear the mats! Wrestlers, clear the mats!”

Drake Rhodes will be competing at AA Duals in Great Falls as the tournament season begins for our recruits. Several of our recruits will be competing at tournaments hosted by their home school in Riggins, Block, and Kueter. The only two-day tournament will be Easton Fleshman at the Herb Igrens Invitational in Ida Grove on Friday and Saturday.

Gabe Arnold will be in one of the top dual meets of the season this year when Wyoming Seminary hosts Blair Academy in a clash of highly nationally ranked teams tonight.

I will do my best to bring you results this season for all of our incoming recruits right here on my blog.

Coralville to host 2022 & 2023 World Cup

United World Wrestling has awarded the 2022 and 2023 Men’s and Women’s World Cup to the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. This will mark the first time that the men’s and women’s competition will be held side by side and the first time that the Women’s World Cup will take place in the United States.

The 2022 Men’s and Women’s World Cup will be on December 10-11, and the 2023 Men’s and Women’s World Cup will be on December 9-10.

The Men’s Freestyle World Cup features the top five men’s freestyle wrestling teams in the world plus an all-world team, while the Women’s Freestyle World Cup features the top five women’s freestyle wrestling teams in the world, plus an all-world team.

Ticket packages for the general public for the 2022 Men’s and Women’s Freestyle World Cup go on sale on Friday, February 4 at 10:00 a.m. CT. The seating capacity for Xtream Arena for the World Cup will be approximately 5,300. Fans are encouraged to buy immediately, as organizers expect to sell out quickly.

Xtream Arena is a state-of-the-art facility that was just built in 2020 right off of I-80 about a mile from legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Home of the University of Iowa Wrestling program. Iowa hosted the 2018 World Cup in Carver-Hawkeye and it was a big success.

From teamusa.org, former University of Iowa NCAA National champion Terry Steiner:

“For the first time in history, the Women’s World Cup will be held in the United States. This will also be the first time that the World Cup for both men’s and women’s freestyle will be held together. I can’t think of a better place to host these events than in the state of Iowa, and in the Iowa City/Coralville community. I know that this community appreciates great wrestling. They are in for a spectacular event, with the best teams in the world battling for World dual meet titles,” said Terry Steiner, USA Wrestling National Women’s Coach.

We can thank Josh Schamberger and former Iowa All American Luke Eustice for their part in winning the nomination. With Schamberger and Eustice of Think Iowa City involved you can count on more international and national events being hosted at Xtream Arena.

Nobody in the world supports wrestling like Iowa City, Iowa USA. What an honor and opportunity to have the best wrestlers in the world coming into town for what will be a great event.

Great job to all of those involved in making this happen.

It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Iowa-Ohio State preview

Iowa will travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on #6 Ohio State on Friday at 7 PM. The meet will be televised live on BTN. As with any Big Ten dual meet every single match is important for seeds at the Big Tens and NCAA National Tournament.

There is only one weight with an option of more than one wrestler for Iowa. Both Austin DeSanto and Cullan Schriever are listed at 133. Jaydin Eierman is the only Hawkeye listed at 141 so we can expect his return to the mat after missing both dual meets last weekend.

Several matches really stick out to me. #18 Abe Assad will have an opportunity to improve his ranking and future seeds when he faces #7 Kaleb Romero at 184. #10 Max Murin will face Ohio State’s highest ranked wrestler in #2 Sammy Sasso at 149. #2 Michael Kemerer will face #7 Ethan Smith at 174.

There are always fireworks when Iowa and Ohio State compete and I am looking for an exciting dual meet. I expect the Hawks to have another impressive performance.

Remaining schedule: 165-Hwt

We are down to just five dual meets before the tournaments begin. Every single match is crucial for rankings at the National Tournament and Big Tens. As fans we are in for some great wrestling for the last two months of the season. The remaining five dual meets will provide matches with highly ranked opponents.

Jacob Warner is currently ranked #4 at 197. Warner will face the #1,2, and 3 ranked wrestlers at his weight along with two ranked up and coming opponents. We will see the top two ranked wrestlers at 174 in the Penn State meet with #2 Michael Kemerer vs. #1 Carter Starocci. #1 Alex Marinelli will face three opponents ranked in the top eight at 165.

I have been making comments on by blog for weeks now that Abe Assad is underranked at 184 at #18. We will soon find out with Assad facing the #1,7,10, and 11 ranked wrestlers in the country. What a great opportunity for Assad.

As with Kemerer and Warner, every one of the five remaining opponents for Tony Cassioppi is ranked. Cassioppi will face the #4,8,11,12, and 30 ranked wrestlers at Hwt.

We are in for a very entertaining finish to the 2022 wrestling season for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
