Just last night I posted that Iowa Wrestling Recruiting Class of 2017 member Jacob Warner would be competing in the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic, also know as the Dapper Dan. It was just announced by FloWrestling that Spencer Lee, the best recruit in the history of Iowa Wrestling, will be squaring off against Daton Fix of Oklahoma at 126 lbs. What a great promotion by this event that calls themselves: “The Rose Bowl of Wrestling.” A match like this and they can call themselves the “Super Bowl of Wrestling.”
Lee, from Murrysville, PA, is a three-time World Freestyle Champion and was just replaced by Fix on FloWrestling as the number one P4P (pound for pound) recruit in the country. For wrestling fans, this will be a huge draw and will gain a lot of media attention. This is a great promotion for our sport of wrestling. If you could name one match in high school wrestling that you wanted to see in the United States, Lee vs. Fix would be it.
To add even more to this story line, Fix defeated Lee at the 2015 UWW Cadet National tournament in a best of three series. Lee went on to win a World title in 2015 and 2016 (and 2014). Fix won a Bronze at the Junior Worlds. If you needed anything else to add to the buildup of this match, here you go. Lee is as you know an Iowa Hawkeye. Fix, from Sandy Springs, OK, has committed to Oklahoma State. You really can’t script this stuff. What a great example of high school wrestling at its very best.
As maybe you could tell, I am very excited about this match. I have no doubt that the Lee-Fix match will be one that we will be talking about for years to come. A big thank you to all of those that made this match happen.
I am now hoping that Jacob Warner and Spencer Lee will be joined by Iowa Wrestling Recruiting Class of 2017 teammate Max Murin in the dual meet. I would think Murin would get a shot on the Pennsylvania All Star team. I will keep you posted.
The dual meet will take place on Saturday, March 25 at 5 PM CST at the Fitzgerald Field House on the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA.
You can watch the dual meet live on FloWrestling (www.flowrestling.org).
