It is usually pretty quiet on social media on a Sunday morning. At around 7:15 AM yesterday, the news hit that Spencer Lee had registered to compete at the U.S. Open this coming weekend in Ft. Worth. I simply hit share on Facebook and Twitter of what FloWrestling had posted.
The response was amazing. The likes for the posts flooded in as well as plenty of comments. There had been a lot of speculation that Lee would compete in the U.S. Open, but it was still exciting to hear the news that he was registered to compete. I was again reminded of how popular Spencer Lee and Iowa Wrestling really are. Spencer Lee is always big news.
Lee will compete at a loaded 57kg bracket that will be very entertaining for us fans to watch. Four or five wrestlers at 57kg will qualify for the Olympic Trials on April 4-5, 2020. Four will qualify if Nahshon Garrett is in the top five, five will qualify if he is not. That is my brief understanding of the situation at 57kg.
The Men’s Freestyle competition of the U.S. Open will be on Saturday and Sunday, December 21-22. FloWrestling will have live coverage for all of the wrestling at the U.S. Open.
After winning three World titles in Cadets and Juniors, this will be Lee’s first competition at the Senior level. I would think that the interest in the U.S. Open this weekend went up quite a bit now that Spencer Lee is competing. No doubt that the Iowa Wrestling nation will be following the results and probably a large portion of all wrestling fans in the country. I will have a U.S. Open preview later this week.
