With a break in the schedule I wanted to go through each weight with a mid-season review.

I am sure that Iowa fans will not soon forget the dramatic return of Spencer Lee at 125 in the Iowa State meet. Lee came through with a 16-5 major decision in his first competition in almost a year to lead Iowa to an 18-15 victory over the Cyclones.

When will we see Lee compete again? Iowa is at the Soldier Salute in Coralville on December 29-30. Maybe we see Lee make weight both days and wrestle a few matches. This would be a really good simulation for Big Tens and the NCAA National Tournament.

One thing that was easy for all to see is that Lee is bigger than last year. Making weight and competing in a 1-2 hour time frame will be a bigger challenge than in the past. That is why I was thinking out loud that we may see him compete at the Soldier Salute.

In Lee’s absence, Iowa is 0-6 at 125 in dual meets this season. After the first of the year we head into the rugged Big Ten where the competition level will go up a big notch. Or three. The remaining Iowa schedule is loaded with ranked wrestlers at 125 with the #3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 25 nationally ranked opponents. Lee is ranked #1.

I am hoping for a healthy Spencer Lee for Big Tens and the NCAA National Tournament as he goes for his fourth NCAA title.
