The starting spot at 133 was one of the big questions for the starting lineup heading into the season. Senior transfer Brody Teske defeated Cullan Schriever in the wrestle off to make the varsity squad. In the season opener Teske defeated Hunter Leake of Cal-Baptist, 6-4. We have not seen Teske since due to an injury.
Schriever started the season off by winning the Luther Open. He then won his first three varsity matches to begin the year with an 8-0 record. Since then he has dropped three straight close matches in dual meets.
Following the Iowa State meet Tom Brands stated on the radio that Teske was the starter at 133 but that he was out with an injury. I hope we will see Teske in the lineup soon. Even though Teske has only wrestled that one early match he is still ranked #14 by InterMat.
Eight of the nine remaining dual meets have a ranked opponent at 133 including the #1 and #2 ranked wrestlers in the country. I am hoping Teske gets the quality mat time in to prepare for the post season tournaments.
Points for Iowa at 133 will be critical in the team race. Teske certainly has the potential to score quality points for us and challenge for All American status at the NCAA National Tournament.
