Ella Schmit of the University of Iowa placed fifth at the Klippan Lady Open in Klippan, Sweden.
Competing at 62 kg/136 lbs. Schmit was 1-2 for the tournament.
She competed in the Open division that had 26 teams from 16 countries. This is a big step up in competition for a true freshman to compete in an open international tournament.
Originally from Bettendorf, Iowa where she was a three-time IWCOA state champion, Schmit was the 2022 Dan Gable Ms. Wrestler of the Year. Schmit was the first native Iowan to join the Iowa Women’s wrestling team.
Schmit is a true freshman at the University of Iowa. Members of the new women’s program can compete unattached this year and the first official year will be for the 2023-24 season.
