Members of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club competed at the Bill Farrell Memorial International in New York City today.

Spencer Lee looked like Spencer Lee in winning the 57kg title. After three first period tech falls, Lee defeated former NCAA National champion Nico Megaludis in the finals, 7-4. Winning the tournament qualified Lee for the 2024 Olympic Team Trials in April. Lee looks ready to go for a run at an Olympic Gold.

Austin DeSanto won by a 13-3 tech fall over Yahya Thomas to place third at 65kg. 

Pat Lugo dropped a 2-1 decision to teammate DeSanto in the Consolation semifinals at 65kg.

At 74kg Alex Marinelli dropped the finals match to Jason Nolf, 11-0. Marinelli had won a match by tech fall and two by decision to make the finals.

Jacob Warner placed second at 97kg. Warner made his way to the finals with a tech fall and a decision before dropping the finals bout to Michael Micchlavello, 4-0.

True freshman Rose Cassioppi of the Iowa Women’s Wrestling team dropped an 8-3 decision to Vlanne Rouleau of Canada in her only match at 76kg.

The 2024 Olympic Team Trials will be at Penn State in University Park, Pennsylvania on April 19-20.

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games for Men’s Freestyle will be in Paris, France on August 8-11.
