As I have said before there is not a better way to spend an Iowa winter weekend than following Iowa Wrestling. The competition started Friday afternoon and went through Sunday afternoon. Let’s take a look.

The Iowa Women’s Wrestling team dominated in two dual meets at the Indiana Tech Warrior Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana Friday afternoon. Iowa defeated #9 (NAIA) Campbellsville 42-2 and #14 (NAIA) Indiana Tech 42-0.

The Hawks were 20-0 in matches contested with seven pins and nine tech falls.

The Hawks were on the road this weekend for two Big Ten dual meets. On Friday night Iowa defeated #17 Illinois, 36-6. Iowa won eight matches including four tech falls, one pin, and one major decision.

The biggest match was #9 Patrick Kennedy scoring a third period takedown to defeat #3 Edmond Ruth 5-1 at 174. Kennedy is on a roll.

Brody Teske filled in for Real Woods at 141 in both dual meets. He won by a decision against Illinois and a tech fall over Northwestern.

Seven Hawkeyes placed at the Pat “Flash” Flanagan Open in Dubuque on Saturday. Kale Petersen(133), Cade Siebrecht(149), Drake Rhodes(165), Will Carano(174), and Easton Fleshman(Hwt) placed second.

Carter Martinson placed third at 157 and Isaiah Fenton was fifth at 165.

Charles Matthews(141), Carson Martinson(165), and Aidan McCain(184) did not place.

On Saturday the Iowa Women’s team competed at the Warrior Open in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Four Hawks brought home a title: Lilly Luft(136), Reese Larramendy(143), Kylie Welker(170), and Jaycee Foeller(191). 

Iowa had thirteen wrestlers place at the Warrior Open.

The Hawks will be back in action this Wednesday, January 31 with a dual meet at the University of South Falls in Sioux Falls, SD.

Our incoming Iowa Wrestling recruits had a perfect weekend of wrestling. The incoming recruits for the men’s program were a combined 10-0 with six pins and four tech falls. 

Our recruits for the women’s program were a combined 11-0 with 11 pins at Regionals. Nine of the eleven pins were in the first period.

 

On Sunday the Iowa Hawkeyes picked up a shutout with a 46-0 win over Big Ten foe Northwestern. The Hawks had four tech falls, two pins, and two major decisions.

Caleb Rathjen (149) and Ben Kueter(Hwt) picked up pins. Drake Ayala, Cullan Schriever, Brody Teske, and Mike Caliendo won by tech fall. Patrick Kennedy and Zach Glazier won by a major decision.

The Hawks will be back on the mat Friday for a Big Ten dual meet at Michigan at 7:30 PM CST on BTN.
