The Iowa Hawkeyes are the 2024 NCWWC National Champions. Powered by six national champions Iowa came storming back from 14.5 points after the quarterfinals to catch and pass North Central to capture the team title by six points, 204-198.
Iowa and North Central had five matchups in the semifinals where North Central was a favorite in three of the matches. The Iowa Hawkeyes won all five of those matches to take a lead after the semifinals.
North Central then regained the lead in the Consolations. In the Consolations Lily Luft and Bella Mir placed 5th and Ella Schmit was 7th.
The Hawks then not only won six weight classes in the finals, they did it in dominating style.
At 101 it was a clash of Iowa teammates as Emilie Gonzalez defeated Sterling Dias, 4-0. At 109 Ava Bayless defeated Kaelani Shufeldt of Lock Haven, 2-1.
It was another All-Hawkeye final at 116 where Felicity Taylor defeated Brianna Gonzalez, 9-2. At 143 Reese Larramendy won by fall over Aine Drury of King University in 4:10. Marlynne Deede won the title at 155 with a 9-3 decision over Cheyenne Bowman of King University.
In the finals at 191 Sandra Guerrero of New Jersey City University won by fall over Jaycee Foeller.
With the team title on the line in the final match of the tournament, at 170 lbs. Iowa and North Central sent the best wrestler on their team out on the mat. Kylie Welker scored an 11-0 tech fall over three-time national champion Yelena Makoyed for the individual and team title.
That is the way to win a team title.
What an amazing year for the University of Iowa in their first year of competition. Iowa is the first program in a Power 5 Conference to have women’s wrestling. The Hawks also won the National Duals title in January. Winning this team title is huge for the entire sport of women’s college wrestling.
