After Day 1 of the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the Iowa Hawkeyes are in fourth place with five wrestlers in the Quarterfinals.
Drake Ayala(133), Michael Caliendo(165), Patrick Kennedy(174), Stephen Buchanan(197), and Ben Kueter(Hwt) won their first and second round matches to advance to the Quarterfinals.
Ayala, Caliendo and Buchanan won both of their matches with bonus points. Ayala had a tech fall and a major decision, Caliendo had two major decisions and Buchanan had a major decision and a tech fall.
Of the five Quarterfinal matches Iowa is the favorite at 133, 165 and 197. At Hwt. Kueter is the #5 seed facing the #4 seed and at 174 Kennedy is the #11 seed competing against the #3 seed.
With Joey Cruz and Jacori Teemer eliminated Iowa has seven wrestlers competing for All American honors.
Iowa is in a three-way tie for fourth place with 18 points.
The point totals will add up in the Quarterfinal round when the winner will get advancement points for 8th, 7th and 6th place for advancing to the Semifinals for guaranteed All American status.
