We had yet another big weekend of competition for Iowa Wrestling. Here is a weekend wrap-up to keep you up to date.

On Saturday Iowa defeated #4 Ohio State 24-13. I will start by saying how impressed I was with the crowd. A 1 PM start time is a conflict with high school and kids wrestling tournaments yet there was a great crowd in legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa won 7 matches against a loaded Ohio State team in an impressive showing. Joey Cruz continues to be a spark in the lineup with his third straight Big Ten win of the new year with a 6-5 decision over #28 Brendan McCrone at 125.

I thought that was a huge match after I found out that #3 Drake Ayala would not be wrestling. That news had me concerned about the dual meet. Cruz came through to set the tone for the meet.

The big news story of the day was the return of #1 Jacori Teemer at 157. Teemer has been out with an injury and this was his first competition since November 23. Teemer looked good in a 10-5 decision over #17 Sammy Sasso. Michael Caliendo was also stood out with an 11-3 major decision over #9 Paddy Gallagher.

Stephan Buchanan looked like the #1 ranked wrestler in the country with an 18-1 tech fall over #17 Seth Shumate. Buchanan just keeps getting better.

Ben Kueter defeated #6 Nick Feldman at Hwt, 5-4. This was a huge win for Kueter with his first win over a top eight ranked wrestler.

Overall this was a real good showing for Iowa.

The Hawks are back in action this Friday, January 31 at Penn State at 6 PM CST on BTN.

The 2025 edition of the Arctic Plunge was a big success for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club. This is the biggest fundraiser every year for the HWC.

The Arctic Plunge was held at the Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville following the Iowa-Ohio State dual meet.

For the second year in a row over $150,000 was raised.

I was able to hear Tom Brands’ interview on KCJJ after the meet. Coach Brands spoke well of Chad Beatty, Executive Director of the HWC, on his organization and energy making the Arctic Plunge a success.

Thank you to all that donated, raised money and supported the 2025 HWC Arctic Plunge.

It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Go Hawks!
