Harvey Ludington season preview

It was great news for Hawk fans when elite recruit Harvey Ludington announced on Saturday that he had committed to the University of Iowa.

Ludington, from Brick, New Jersey(Brick Memorial HS), is the #1 rated 190 lbs. high school wrestler in the country.  Ludington is #1 at 190 by MatScouts and FloWrestling.

The #1 spot was earned from titles at Fargo at Junior Nationals with a tech fall in the finals as well as elite tournaments like Beast of the East and two New Jersey state titles.

Ludington had originally committed to Arizona State last December but recently opened up his recruiting options.

In 2022 Ludington won a state title as a freshman at 175 and placed second at 175 as a sophomore in a one point match. Last season he won a state title at 190 with a 30-0 record. That is impressive for the level of competition and that New Jersey has only one state champion per weight.

As I have done with all of our incoming recruits for years on this blog I will add Ludington to my Friday blogs of upcoming weekend competitions and a follow up blog with results on my “Recruits in action” series.

Recruits in action: Dec 14 – RESULTS

We had a quiet weekend of competition for our incoming recruits but we had huge news of a new recruit. I will take that any time.

Paolo Ciatto competed at the Linda Stewart Duals in Albany on Saturday where he was 5-0 with four pins and a tech fall.

That was the only competition that I know for our incoming recruits. We will have more to follow next weekend.

Iowa has made a statement in recruiting the heavier weights over the last three recruiting classes. The top recruit for Iowa in the Class of 2023 was Hwt Ben Kueter and in 2024 it was Angelo Ferrari at 184.

Looking ahead to the future Iowa Wrestling lineup:

174 – Gabe Arnold

184 – Angelo Ferrari

197 – Harvey Ludington

Hwt. – Ben Kueter

Hawk fans, that is a lineup we all really want to see.

As I have done with all of our incoming recruits for years on this blog I will add Ludington to my Friday blogs of upcoming weekend competitions and a follow up blog with results on my “Recruits in action” series.

Iowa in the new InterMat Rankings – Dec 10

InterMat released rankings this morning after a big weekend of college wrestling.

Penn State and Iowa are still 1-2 in the Tournament and Dual Meet rankings. Penn State is at 124.5 and Iowa at 88 points. The big change was Oklahoma State going from #5 to #3 at 82 points.

Iowa has steadily gone up in team points as the season progresses.

The Hawks now have seven wrestlers ranked in the top eight that would make them All Americans.

Defense Soap: Natural performance skincareDiamond Dental, P.C. Dentist in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Joey Cruz replaced Kale Petersen at 125 and is ranked #30. Cruz competed in both dual meets last weekend at 125.

The rest of the team are pretty much where they have been ranked the last three weeks.

Iowa will compete next at Soldier Salute on December 29-30 so I do not anticipate any changes to where the Iowa wrestlers will be ranked for the rest of December.

Iowa starts the Big Ten season at Wisconsin on Sunday, January 12.
