Lee vs. Gilman in Olympic Trials Finals
We will have an All-Hawkeye clash in the 57kg finals in the Olympic Team Trials. Spencer Lee and Thomas Gilman will meet in a best of three format in State College, Pennsylvania. The winner will represent Team USA at the Summer Olympics in Paris, France on August 5-11.
#4 seed Lee defeated Nico Megaludis 8-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals Lee jumped out to a 9-0 lead over 57kg 2023 World Team member Zane Richards before securing a 13-6 decision.
#2 seed Gilman started with a 5-4 decision over Jax Forrest in the quarterfinals before defeating Daton Fix 6-0 in the semifinals.
In my Olympic Trials preview I predicted Lee over Gilman in the finals.
We also have wrestlers competing in the Consolations. Alex Marinell (74kg), Kylie Welker(76kg), Reese Larramendy(68kg),and at 53 kg Felicity Taylor will face teammate Brianna Gonzalez.

Iowa Wrestling fundraiser to support Shelter House
The University of Iowa Wrestling program will participate in Take Down Homelessness.
This is a great fundraiser where fans can bid in an auction to have dinner with one of their favorite Iowa wrestlers. All of the proceeds go to support Shelter House in Iowa City.
In September of 2022 there were 5 Iowa wrestlers that participated in Take Down Homelessness. This year the list has grown to 18 Iowa wrestlers.
An online auction will open at 10 AM CST on Monday, April 22 and close on Friday, April 26 at 8PM.
I will have a follow up blog with a direct link to the auction when it is available.
From shelterhouseiowa.org
Since 1983, Shelter House has provided safe shelter and helped people improve the quality of their lives as they move beyond homelessness. We began in an old home in Iowa City with a capacity of 29 sleeping spaces including beds, couches, and mats on the floor. Today, Shelter House operates a 70-bed emergency shelter in addition to four homes and an apartment building through which we provide over 60 permanent supportive housing units.
We focus on programs and support services including housing, employment, and mental health recovery that help hundreds of adults, children, and families each year to get back on their feet. We aim to be a voice for systemic community change through excellence in service, financial stewardship, and the development of strong community partnerships.
Iowa Wrestlers Take Down Homelessness online auction opens April 22 at 10:00 am.
Iowa Wrestlers Take Down Homelessness online auction closes April 26 at 8:00 pm.
The week of April 28, Shelter House will be in contact with wrestlers and winning bidders about final auction outcomes, dinner planning, etc.
You can also make a separate donation on the above website to Shelter House.
I ask that you do your part as an Iowa Wrestling fan and get the word out on this fundraiser for a great cause.

Spencer Lee Olympic Trials Preview
In the words of UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer: It’s TIME!!!!!!
The 2024 Olympic Trials are this weekend on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20 in State College, Pennsylvania. When the dust clears Saturday night the 2024 Olympic Team will be set for Team USA for the Summer Olympics in Paris, France on August 5-11.
The Olympic Trials will be shown live on Peacock.
Team USA has not qualified 57 kg for the Olympics at this time. The winner of the Olympic Trials will still have to compete to qualify USA for this weight so a lot is on the line.
Step one is to make the team. Step two is to then qualify 57 kg for the Olympics. Step three is the Olympics. That is a tall task for any wrestler. The winner at 57 kg in the Olympic Trials will be up for the challenge.
At 57 kg there will not be a Challenge Tournament Semifinal because Vito Arujau will not be competing. Vito was scheduled to receive a bye to the semifinals because he is the reigning World Champion at 62 kg. Vito is not competing due to injury.
USA Wrestling just released Pre-Seeds for Men’s Freestyle today.
Spencer Lee is the Pre-Seed #4 at 57kg/125 lbs. Should the Pre-Seeds hold up to be final I could not ask for a better seed. Also I thought Vito was the best competition for Lee at 57 kg and he is not competing.
Former Iowa Hawkeye star World champion and Olympic Silver medalist Thomas Gilman is the #2 seed. I believe we will see a Lee-Gilman final at 57 kg with Lee winning the Olympic spot.
We all know the stats of Spencer Lee. Three-time World Freestyle champ in Cadet/Juniors. Three-time NCAA National champion at the University of Iowa.
This is the first World or Olympic Trials that Lee has competed in at the Senior level.
I do not have a lot else to say except It’s Time!
Let’s get ’em in the middle.

Looking for support
I am looking for support for my Iowa Wrestling Fan blog.
What began as a single blog posted on Hawkeye Report on March 5, 2014 has continued to grow each year.
I cover anything and everything about Iowa Wrestling.
From June 1, 2022 – May 31, 2023 I published 251 Iowa Wrestling Fan Blogs.
From June 1, 2023 – April 12, 2024 I have published 325 Iowa Wrestling Fan Blogs and counting.
I do not know of anyone in wrestling or any other professional or amateur sport anywhere that has the coverage that I do produce for Iowa Wrestling especially at no charge.
The addition of the Iowa Women’s Wrestling blogs has added to my content and has brought in new wrestling fans this season.
As you can probably tell from the amount of blogs that I do that the time commitment has also increased every year.
I am grateful for all of the advertisers and supporters that have got me to where I am at now. They kept this dream and project going. I am now looking for additional support to keep Iowa Wrestling Fan moving forward.
I am continuing to grow my network of sites to post my blogs every year.
Iowa Wrestling Fan Blog is posted on the following sites:

When you do a Google search for Iowa Wrestling history you will not find very much. It is hard to believe that there is not a place to read about the history of Iowa Wrestling on the internet.
With that in mind I have acquired IowaWrestlingHistory.com . My goal with IowaWrestlingHistory.com is to build an online shrine to Iowa Wrestling.
I believe there is nobody better than me to create this online shrine to Iowa Wrestling with IowaWrestlingHistory.com.
There will be stats, pictures, and articles about the great history, lineage, tradition, and excellence of Iowa Wrestling. I will be writing all of the information about our past teams, champions, All Americans and Letterwinners.
I have already contacted the museum. When my writing days are done I will hand over IowaWrestlingHistory.com to the Dan Gable Museum of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
If you or anyone you know would be interested in advertising or supporting me on my journey with Iowa Wrestling Fan Blog and IowaWrestlingHistory.com you can contact me at [email protected] and on Facebook Messenger.
Thank you.
It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.
