Iowa Wrestling update

We are in the heart of the tournament season for Division I Wrestling. Big Tens was entertaining as expected.

The Iowa Hawkeyes qualified nine for the 2024 NCAA National Wrestling Championships to be held in Kansas City, Missouri on March 21-23. Iowa finished fourth in the team race.

You always hope for as many qualifiers as possible and for everyone to stay healthy. We got the nine qualifiers with every weight except 184 and I am hoping we came out of Big Tens in good health.

Overall, Iowa wrestled above their seeds at Big Tens. Three wrestlers placed exactly at their seed (141,157,165). We had four wrestlers finish above their seed (133,184,197, Hwt) and three finish below their seed (125,149,174).

Placement/Seed at Big Tens

125 – Drake Ayala 3rd/#2

133 – Brody Teske 5th/#14

141 – Real Woods 3rd/#3

149 – Caleb Rathjen 5th/#3

157 – Jared Franek 4th/#4

165 – Mike Caliendo 3rd/#3

174 – Patrick Kennedy 5th/#3

184 – Aiden Riggins 10th/#13

197 – Zach Glazier 2nd/#3

Hwt – Brad Hill  5th/#7

The biggest match for me all weekend was the first round at 133. #14 seed Brody Teske was behind #3 seed Nic Bouzakis of Ohio State 13-6 at the start of the third period. Teske chose down. When the dust cleared from a wild third period Teske won the match 15-13 with two back points at the end. That is the definition of Iowa Wrestling and a match I will not soon forget.

Next up is the release of the brackets.

The 2024 NCAA wrestling Division I championship brackets will be revealed during a selection show streamed live on NCAA.com at 7 p.m. CST on Wednesday, March 13.

As a fan I cannot wait. This is all part of the fan experience for this time of year. I will be sure and let you know about the brackets when they are released.

Wednesday at 7 PM cannot get here fast enough.

I am looking forward to Nationals and being entertained by Iowa Wrestling.

Hawks win NCWWC National title

The Iowa Hawkeyes are the 2024 NCWWC National Champions. Powered by six national champions Iowa came storming back from 14.5 points after the quarterfinals to catch and pass North Central to capture the team title by six points, 204-198.

Iowa and North Central had five matchups in the semifinals where North Central was a favorite in three of the matches. The Iowa Hawkeyes won all five of those matches to take a lead after the semifinals.

North Central then regained the lead in the Consolations. In the Consolations Lily Luft and Bella Mir placed 5th and Ella Schmit was 7th.

The Hawks then not only won six weight classes in the finals, they did it in dominating style.

At 101 it was a clash of Iowa teammates as Emilie Gonzalez defeated Sterling Dias, 4-0. At 109 Ava Bayless defeated Kaelani Shufeldt of Lock Haven, 2-1.

It was another All-Hawkeye final at 116 where Felicity Taylor defeated Brianna Gonzalez, 9-2. At 143 Reese Larramendy won by fall over Aine Drury of King University in 4:10. Marlynne Deede won the title at 155 with a 9-3 decision over Cheyenne Bowman of King University.

In the finals at 191 Sandra Guerrero of New Jersey City University won by fall over Jaycee Foeller.

With the team title on the line in the final match of the tournament, at 170 lbs. Iowa and North Central sent the best wrestler on their team out on the mat. Kylie Welker scored an 11-0 tech fall over three-time national champion Yelena Makoyed for the individual and team title.

That is the way to win a team title.

What an amazing year for the University of Iowa in their first year of competition. Iowa is the first program in a Power 5 Conference to have women’s wrestling. The Hawks also won the National Duals title in January. Winning this team title is huge for the entire sport of women’s college wrestling.

Congratulations NCWWC National Champions Iowa Wrestling.

I will continue to follow members of the Iowa Women’s wrestling team this spring and summer as they pursue a spot on Team USA for Olympic and World Teams.

Big Tens Preview

It’s tournament time. The Iowa Hawkeyes will compete at the 110th Big Ten Wrestling Championships in College Park, Maryland on Saturday and Sunday.

Gotta love this time of year. So much hard work has gone into the season to get to this point. Now it is time to play for keeps as they say.

The Hawks have seven wrestlers in the top four in the Pre-Seeds. Of course the first goal is to qualify for the NCAA National Tournament. Several Hawks have their work cut out for them to make it to Nationals.

As I went through each weight for my previews something was very apparent. This is the eleventh year of my Iowa Wrestling Fan Blog and this is the weakest the Big Ten has been in that time frame.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some real good weights and the Big Ten is still the dominant conference in the country. However the depth of high ranked wrestlers is just not there the way it has been the last ten years.

I am looking for a good showing by the Hawks at Big Tens. I believe that the up and down season prepared them for this type of competition. Now is the time to avenge previous losses and win the ones you are supposed to.

You can listen to the Big Tens on iheart.com, YouTube, and AM 800 KXIC where Steven Grace and Mark Ironside will call the action.

Let’s get ‘em in the middle.

Big Tens Preview – Hwt

As with 197 as a fan I have enjoyed following our young Heavyweights for Iowa this season. Brad Hill (redshirt freshman) and Ben Kueter (true freshman) have done a real good job.

As far as who will take the mat for Iowa at Big Tens between Kueter and Hill it looks to be Hill with the #7 Pre-Seed.

Hill, ranked #29 in the country, is 26-5 with three pins, four tech falls, and five major decisions and is 0-3 vs. ranked opponents.

At Hwt the Big Ten has the #1,6 and 7 ranked wrestlers in the country and seven of the top thirty wrestlers. The Big Ten has seven automatic qualifiers at Hwt.

I really like the way that Hill has progressed throughout the season and I look for him to qualify for Nationals.

Big Tens Preview – 197

As a fan it has been great to follow Zach Glazier at 197 this season. In all of my years following Iowa Wrestling I have never had a wrestler basically come out of nowhere to surprise me at this level and have a great year like Glazier did this season.

Glazier is 21-1 with two pins, seven tech falls, five major decisions and is 6-1 vs. ranked opponents.

The only loss for Glazier this season was a 5-1 decision to #1 ranked and undefeated Aaron Brooks of Penn State. That is the only match that Brooks has not scored bonus points in this season.

Yet Glazier is still only ranked #11 in the country. #11?

At 197 the Big Ten has the #1 and 4 ranked wrestlers in the country and nine of the top thirty-three  wrestlers. The Big Ten has seven automatic qualifiers at 197.

Glazier is the #3 Pre-Seed at 197.

I am looking forward to seeing how Glazier does at Big Tens and Nationals.

Big Tens Preview – 184

At 184 the Big Ten has the #1,3,and 7 ranked wrestlers in the country and nine of the top thirty-one. With all of that the Big Ten only has eight automatic qualifiers at 184.

Aiden Riggins started off the season at 174 and then bumped up to 184. I appreciate the effort that Riggins has shown this season especially considering his natural weight would have him at 165. That is a lot to ask of anyone especially a freshman.

Riggins is unranked with a record of 11-11 with four tech falls and is 1-4 vs. ranked opponents this season.

Riggins is #13 at 184 in the Big Tens Pre-Seeds.
