Iowa recruits in action: Jan 5-6 RESULTS
We had a limited schedule for our incoming recruits this weekend. Leo DeLuca pinned two national caliber opponents at the RWC New Years Duals in Richmond, Virginia. DeLuca is tearing it up while competing in the toughest schedule in the country week in and week out.
Keyan Hernandez won the title at 126 lbs. at the 43-team Tom LeProwse Tournament in Bozeman. Hernandez was 6-0 for the tournament with four pins.
Leister Bowling had a busy weekend. On Friday he was 2-0 with two pins at the Gunnison Dual Tournament. On Saturday Bowling won the 175 lbs. title with two pins and a tech fall.
Naomi Simon was 4-0 with four first period pins winning the 170 lbs. title at the Anamosa Invitation.
I will post results for Dru Ayala from the St. Edmond Duals as soon as I have them.
As I have done for years I will continue to post a blog on Friday of where our incoming recruits will be competing for the weekend and a follow up blog with results.

Iowa wins NWCA National Duals
The Iowa Women’s Wrestling team made a way to win their first NWCA National Duals title with a thrilling 21-20 battle over #1 seed North Central in the finals. The Hawks had a 20-17 lead heading into the last bout at 191 where Jaycee Foeller dropped a 6-1 decision to Traeh Haynes, 6-1. With the Freestyle scoring North Central received three points and Iowa was awarded one point for scoring in the bout giving Iowa the one-point victory and the NWCA National Duals title.
Iowa won four matches and North Central won six in the dual meet.
Iowa got off to a quick start with a tech fall from Sterling Dias at 101 followed by a 5-5 decision on criteria by Ava Bayless at 109 for a 7-1 lead in the dual meet. Iowa then dropped the next five matches to fall behind in the team score, 16-12.
The key to those five losses by Iowa is that each wrestler scored in the match so one team point was awarded to Iowa in all five bouts. With the point that Foeller was awarded at 191 for scoring in her match that would give Iowa six crucial team points in matches they lost and that would prove to be the difference in the dual meet.
Marlynne Deede came up huge with a pin in 1:38 at 155 to make the team score 17-16 Iowa. Kylie Welker won an 11-3 decision at 170 to give the Hawks a 20-17 lead heading into 191.
In the semifinals Iowa dominated two-time defending National Champion King, 31-8. Iowa won with two pins, one tech fall, four decisions and one forfeit.
For Iowa to win the NWCA National Duals in the first year of their program and without their full lineup is impressive.
Congratulations to the Iowa Women’s Wrestling team for winning the NWCA National Duals title.
With the success of this tournament I would believe that the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls will host this event for years to come.
Iowa will compete next when they host the Iowa Duals in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday, January 21. A starting time has yet to be announced. I will keep you posted.
Kylie Welker of the University of Iowa will represent Team USA at the Zagreb Open in Zagreb, Croatia. Welker will compete at 76 KG/167 lbs. on Saturday, January 13.

Women’s National Duals preview
The Iowa Women’s Wrestling team will take to the mats at the 2024 NWCA National Duals this weekend. The UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls will host 96 teams on Friday and Saturday (Jan 5-6) competing for a team dual national title in both men’s and women’s divisions.
Iowa is the #2 seed in the NCAA Women’s Freestyle division in a 16-team bracket.
The Hawks will open the tournament with #15 seed Adrian College at 2:30 PM Friday. The Quarterfinals are slated for 4 PM Friday. The Semifinals are scheduled for 10:30 AM Saturday with the Finals at 1:30 PM.
Should seeds hold up Iowa would face #3 seed King, the two-time defending champions, in the semifinals. #1 seed North Central is in the top half of the bracket.
There was some confusion on social media from my post yesterday. As I stated in my blog yesterday Iowa is ranked #1 in the Tournament Rankings. This is a dual meet format and Iowa is the #2 seed.
I do not know what to expect for competition as this will be the first big test for the first year program. This tournament will certainly let everyone know how good the Iowa Hawkeyes are in their first year of competition.
I expect Iowa to have their full lineup for the first time this season and to be ready to go.

Iowa Women seeded #2 for National Duals
Seeds for NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls this weekend have been released. In the NCAA Women’s Freestyle division Iowa is seeded #2.
With the current seeds Iowa would face #7 Presbyterian in the first round. The Hawks defeated Presbyterian 44-1 at the Trail Blazer Duals in Iowa City on November 12.
The potential semifinal matchup for Iowa would be #3 seed King, the two-time defending Freestyle Team Champions.
North Central is the #1 seed.
In the NWCA/NCAA Women’s Coaches Rankings for individuals and tournament released yesterday Iowa was #1, North Central #2, and King #3.
The competition will be Friday and Saturday, January 5-6 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Iowa Women ranked #1 in NWCA Coaches Poll
The NWCA/NCAA Women’s Coaches Rankings were released today. Iowa remained ranked #1 with fourteen ranked wrestlers.

Sterling Dias (101), Ava Bayless (109), Felicity Taylor (123) Nanea Estrella (136), and Ella Schmitt (143) are ranked #2.
It is especially impressive when Iowa has the #1 and #2 ranked wrestlers in the country like they do at 101 and 143.
Iowa is on a collision course with North Central and King at National Duals this Friday and Saturday (Jan 5-6) in Cedar Falls. I will have a preview of National Duals later this week.

Iowa Wrestling update
For my first blog of 2024 I am going to go through the weights and team overall for an update and get ready for the upcoming Big Ten and tournament season.
But first…
There has been more said about Iowa Wrestling online in the last four days than in any stretch over the last twenty years. I will just say in the history of the internet.
Everybody has an opinion of A.J. Ferrari and what went on after the finals of Soldier Salute. I will be brief.
Do I like what happened? No. Nobody does including A.J. He apologized on social media. Unlike critics of Ferrari I have done some things I am not proud of, especially when I was in college.
I will wait and see if Ferrari even gets into the University of Iowa. I am sure that what happened hurt his chances. Classes begin on Tuesday, January 16 so we will know soon enough.
I will tell you that I hope A.J. Ferrari does get into Iowa and has a chance to prove himself in the Black and Gold as an Iowa Hawkeye.
Judge me as you wish.
Onward…
Now, on to the Iowa Wrestling team.
Overall Iowa had a real good tournament at Soldier Salute. For starters Iowa was scoring more points, wrestling with more sense of urgency, and finishing takedowns. My initial reaction is that Iowa is a better team than I thought. Still a lot of work to do but I did see an improvement from the beginning of the season.
Let’s take a look:
125 – This is the Drake Ayala that I have been waiting for. Ayala looked much better this past weekend. He avenged at least four defeats to McKee of Minnesota in the semifinals before topping #7 Jore Volk of Wyoming in the finals, 4-2.
Even with the improvements I believe Ayala has more in him. Confidence will come with success and success will come with confidence for Drake Ayala. I like what I am seeing.
133 – There was a lot going on at 133 for the Iowa Hawkeyes at Soldier Salute. It is rare to have three wrestlers compete at a weight like that.
Brody Teske came away with the title and will be tough to get out of the lineup the rest of the season. In round 3 true freshman Kale Petersen defeated #12 Angelo Rini of Columbia, 12-5. That is a signature win for Petersen. Teske then defeated Petersen by a 15-0 tech fall in the semifinals. In the consolations Cullan Schriever won by a 2-1 decision over Petersen.
141 – #1 Real Woods has looked good all season and yet I believe he will take it up another notch at the Big Tens and NCAA’s. He had two tough opponents that will help prepare for the Big Ten schedule. I like to watch this guy wrestle.
149 – This was a contested weight that turned out to be a wrestle off for a varsity spot. In the semifinals Caleb Rathjen defeated Victor Voinovich, 6-3. In the finals Rathjen defeated Anthony Ferrari, 7-2. Rathjen now has his shot in the varsity lineup.
157 – Jared Franek won the title at Soldier Salute much the way he has wrestled this season. Nothing flashy and some close matches. As long as he keeps getting his hand raised that is more than good enough for me. I do expect him to pick up the pace for scoring though.
165 – I was wrong on my prediction in the finals where Michael Caliendo defeated Patrick Kennedy, 7-3. Caliendo was impressive and looked the best so far as a Hawk in that finals match. Will Kennedy move up to 174? I would think so.
174 – Gabe Arnold won the title as a true freshman wrestling unattached. He had a close match in the finals. Arnold is so hard to score on and shows a lot of discipline for a young wrestler. The big question is will Arnold come out of redshirt and compete? I would say that is dependent on who else is in the lineup at 197 and Hwt. Should Ferrari and Kueter be in the lineup then I expect Arnold to compete this year.
184 – It is easy to see that Aiden Riggins is wrestling up one if not two weight classes. Tough road when giving up that much size in Division I. I do believe we will see Riggins improve as the season progresses.
197 – What has been lost in all of the drama is that there were two very good wrestlers going at it in the finals of Soldier Salute. Zach Glazier has improved a lot from last season. Whoever takes the mat for Iowa at 197 is going to be fun to watch.
Hwt. – Brad Hill is a grinder that will keep improving. I predict that Hill will score an upset to win a dual meet for us this season. He is always ready to go. Fans like me are anticipating that Ben Kueter will join the team now that football is over.
As I said earlier I believe Iowa is better than I thought. I for one am not reading much at all into any drama from Soldier Salute. It’s wrestling. Iowa Wrestling.
The Hawks now have time to train and come together as a team before rolling into Lincoln to face Nebraska on Friday, January 12.
Iowa Wrestling is my entertainment and I plan on being entertained the rest of the season.
Let’s get ‘em in the middle.
It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Hawks win Soldier Salute with 8 champs
The Iowa Hawkeyes won eight of ten weights in winning Soldier Salute with 251.5 points at Xtreme Arena in Coralville. The Hawks had a good two-day tournament with bonus points and noticeable improvement up and down the lineup.

I will go through each weight in a blog tomorrow.
Iowa will compete next with a dual meet at Nebraska on Friday, January 12 to kick off the new year of competition in the Big Ten.
