Iowa-Oklahoma State preview

It would not be a college wrestling season without the Iowa-Oklahoma State dual meet. The two most successful programs in college wrestling history have a long tradition of great battles on the mat. I expect that to be the case yet once again.

Iowa will face Oklahoma State at the Bout at the Ballpark at 8 PM CST on Saturday. The original twist is that the dual meet will take place on the playing field of the Texas Rangers on Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Another added plus is that Team USA will take on an All Star team of International wrestlers from around the world in Men’s and Women’s Freestyle matches and a Greco-Roman match. Victoria Francis of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club will represent Team USA at 76 kg in a dual meet.

This will be an event that will promote the sport in Texas that is an emerging state for wrestling.

The best match for rankings will be at 133 with #3 Austin DeSanto – #2 Daton Fix. At 165 it will be #5 Alex Marinelli – #8 Travis Wittlake. At 157 it will be #12 Kaleb Young – #18 Wyatt Sheets.

Iowa will have the higher ranked wrestler in seven of ten weights but never forget about how much of a rivalry this dual meet is. I expect a very hard fought dual meet just like you would expect from Iowa and Oklahoma State.

There will be a HWC Pre Match Social at Buffalo Wild Wings in Arlington starting at 5 PM.

The Iowa-Oklahoma State dual meet can only be seen on the premium service of FloWrestling.

Lugo and Francis to represent Team USA

Pat Lugo and Victoria Francis of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club will be representing Team USA at elite international tournaments. Lugo will be at the Dan Kolov-Nikola Petrov International in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. Lugo will be competing at 65 kg (143 lbs.) on February 18-19.

From USA Wrestling:

As of now, the live stream is believed to be hosted on the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation’s YouTube page.

Victoria Francis will represent Team USA at the Yasar Dogu in Istanbul, Turkey. There are numerous World and Olympic champions and medal winners that have already registered for this elite event. Francis will compete at 72 kg on February 26.

I am reporting this information from an article released by FloWrestling. USA Wrestling did not have a press release on this competition at the time I released this blog.

From the press release on FloWrestling:

The Yasar Dogu will be the first of four Ranking Series events of the year where wrestlers will look to accumulate seeding points for September’s World Championships.

My thoughts on the Hawks

The 2022 college wrestling season is drawing to an end. The Hawks have only two dual meets before the tournament season kicks in.  Iowa looked good in defeating #16 Wisconsin 29-6 Saturday. I like what I saw from the lineup.

This is the time of year when morning runs put the final touch of conditioning in place.  The steps in Carver will be getting a good workout. I like the schedule with one dual meet per week. That has to help the training cycle for this time of year.

There were some positive signs in the Wisconsin dual meet. Here are a few random thoughts.

  1. DeSanto putting up 13 takedowns? At a Big Ten dual meet? Impressive.
  2. More than anyone I liked what I saw from Eierman. We all know that he has a ton of potential and explosive scoring/pinning moves. Keep scoring more points and the pins will come. I am hoping that the Wisconsin match was the start of his run to peaking at Nationals.
  3. Cassioppi put a major decision on a very tough wrestler yet once again. I believe Cassioppi has worked himself into knowing how his new build and weight works best for him. With the right seed I can see Cassioppi in the NCAA National Finals.
  4. You never want to see one of your guys lose a match. However I believe the loss at Ohio State did Marinelli a lot of good. He was wrestling too tight and seems to have gone to a higher level of want. That can happen to a senior this time of year. The only thing that loss at Ohio State means is that Marinelli will not be an undefeated national champion.
  5. People can keep criticizing Warner and I will keep taking the wins. Warner is a grinder who has his own way to win. Jacob Warner can beat anyone in the country. At a tough and deep weight I see Warner doing real well at Nationals.
  6. Kaleb Young has endured too many battles in his day to not have him as an All American. As with Warner, Young is a typical grinder that will be there for Nationals. It is points they count at Nationals, not style points.
  7. Assad has yet to really cut loose the way I would like to see but the potential is still there. With his next two opponents ranked higher maybe we will see what I have been waiting for. This guy has all the tools to score some much needed points at Nationals.
  8. Turk represented himself real well. That is one tough guy you want on your side.
  9. I’ll be damned if I would bet against Kemerer to win it all. Still believe we have not seen his best performance of the year. He got a much needed look at a low scoring match against Penn State. As with Marinelli I believe that loss will pay dividends from here on out.
  10. Not gonna lie. It was a huge blow to me as a fan when I heard Ayala was out of the lineup. I have no idea if we will see him the rest of the year. Winning the team title will definitely be much harder without a lot of points at 125. Still doable, just more difficult.

I am looking forward to the remaining season we have left. The stakes and intensity just keep going up and up. Gotta love being an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Results for recruits in action: Feb 4-5

Drake Rhodes and Easton Fleshman had dominating performances this weekend. Rhodes was 3-0 with three pins in 1:33, 1:59, and 3:45 at the Eastern Seeding Tournament. Rhodes will compete at the Montana State Tournament next weekend. Fleshman had two pins in :50 and 1:33 to win a Sectional title. They were the only Hawkeye recruits to compete over the weekend.

All of our incoming recruits from Iowa will compete at Disrticts next weekend and then the State Tournament the following weekend. I did see where elite recruit Gabe Arnold was at the Iowa-Wisconsin dual meet in Carver-Hawkeye Arena yesterday.
