Iowa remains #1 in NWCA Women’s Coaches Poll
The Iowa Hawkeyes remained ranked #1 in the final NWCA NCAA Women’s Coaches Poll of the season.
Iowa is #1 with 130 points followed by North Central at 88 and McKendree with 74.
Since the last rankings on February 7 Iowa went up six points and North Central went down two points.
Iowa rolled to the team title at the Region VII Championships in Indianola, Iowa last weekend. The Hawks won all ten weights and five wrestlers placed second for a perfect day of wrestling.
Iowa still has six wrestlers ranked #1 in the country: Rianne Murphy(103), Brianna Gonzalez(117), Macey Kilty(145), Kennedy Blades(160), Kylie Welker(180), and Jaycee Foeller(207).

Emmily Patneuad entered the rankings at #6 at 131 after winning the Region VII Championships last weekend.
The Hawks will be looking to defend their national title when they compete at the NCWWC National Championships on March 7-8 in Coralville, Iowa.

Big Tens preview: 165-Hwt
It’s tournament time wrestling fans. The Iowa Hawkeyes will be competing at the 2025 Big Ten Wrestling Championships in Evanston, Illinois on Saturday and Sunday March 8-9.
For this blog I am previewing 165-Hwt with a listing of ranked wrestlers from the Tuesday, February 25 InterMat Rankings and the number of allocations per weight for Nationals.
Welsh-Ryan Arena has been renovated and should be a great venue for Big Tens. Home of Midlands Hawkeye fans are familiar with this arena.
The Big Ten is by far the most dominant conference in the country. The matchups in the first round at some weights will find both wrestlers ranked in the top 33 in the country.
Big Tens is an intense two-day tournament that will prepare wrestlers for Nationals unlike any other conference tournament.
Michael Calliendo will definitely be the #2 seed at 165. We should see a Caliendo-Mesinbrink finals.
I believe Patrick Kennedy will get the #4 seed at 174. We will see the nationally ranked #2-4-8-10 with Kennedy being #10.
A typical Big Ten weight at 184 with the nationally ranked #1-4-7-8 with Gabe Arnold at #8. I am looking forward to seeing Arnold compete at Big Tens.
Stephen Buchanan will have the top seed at a loaded weight. 197 has the nationally ranked #1-2-3-8.
You can always count on Hwt to be really good in the Big Ten. We will have the nationally ranked #1-2-7-8-9-10-11-12-18-24. Kueter is #11 in the country and will have a high ranked opponent in the quarterfinals.
Pre-Seeds for Big Tens should be released on Monday.
I will keep you up to date right here on my Iowa Wrestling Fan Blog.
Let’s get ‘em in the middle.

Big Tens preview: 125-157
It’s tournament time wrestling fans. The Iowa Hawkeyes will be competing at the 2025 Big Ten Wrestling Championships in Evanston, Illinois on Saturday and Sunday March 8-9.
For this blog I am previewing 125-157 with a listing of ranked wrestlers from the Tuesday, February 25 InterMat Rankings.
Joey Cruz has done real well in the Big Ten and should have 5 or 6 seed at 125.
Drake Ayala will be the top seed at 133. Ranked #2 nationally at 133 Ayala will have the #3-5-6 wrestlers in the country. The semifinals will be tough.
Iowa does not have a ranked wrestler at 141.
Kyle Parco will be the #2 seed at 149. Another tough weight with the national ranked #2-3-4-and 7 in the country.
You always have a few really stacked weights in the Big Ten. For the first five weights 157 is beyond loaded. This weight has the #1-3-4-5-7-8-9-11-16-29-30 ranked wrestler in the entire country. All together in one conference tournament. Impressive.
That is beyond loaded. Jacori Teemer is ranked #3 in the country and I really do not know where he will be seeded.
I will publish my preview for 165-Hwt. tomorrow.
Pre-Seeds for Big Tens should be released on Monday.

Ferrari named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week
University of Iowa freshman Angelo Ferrari has been named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week and Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Ferrari won an exciting 6-3 match in overtime at 184 over previously undefeated and #3 ranked Dustin Plott of Oklahoma State on Sunday.
This was the pivotal match in Iowa winning the dual meet over Oklahoma State, 21-16.
Ferrari is the third Hawkeye to earn Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors this season (Kyle Parco on Jan. 9 and Drake Ayala on Jan. 23).
Ferrari was the 2024 #1 P4P (pound for pound) ranked wrestler in the country by both FloWrestling and MatScouts. Ferrari was also the overall top recruit for Flo for the Class of 2024 when he was a junior.
Originally from Melissa, Texas, Ferrari won a state title at 175 lbs. last season.
Ferrari is 11-1 on the season with four tech falls and three major decisions. He won the 184 lbs. title at the Grand View Open and Soldier Salute.
The Iowa Hawkeyes will be back on the mats on March 8-9 at the 2025 Big Ten Championships in Evanston, Illinois.

Randy Lewis: The Toughest Kid on the Block is now available on Amazon
Randy Lewis: The Toughest Kid on the Block is a new book now available on Amazon.
Bahne B Bahnson is the author of the biography of Randy Lewis.
Lewis is one of the most entertaining wrestlers in American history. His matches were high scoring with his unique wrestling style.
Dan Gable had never seen Lewis wrestle when he offered him a scholarship for the Recruiting Class of 1977 in his first year as a head coach at Iowa. As a three-time state champion out of Rapids City, South Dakota where in his last three seasons he had an 89-0 record and 83 pins. Lewis was a 1977 Junior World champion.
Lewis is one of the greatest wrestlers in Iowa history by going 2-1-1-7 in his career. A severe injury during his senior year kept Lewis from a third title.
Lewis had a 127-11-1 career record with 64 pins and did not redshirt. He made the 1978 World team after his true freshman year and the 1980 Olympic team after his third year of college.
Lewis is one of only two two-time Olympic wrestlers in Iowa Wrestling history(Chris Campbell). The 1980 Olympics were boycotted and he won Gold in 1984 at 136.5 lbs.
I have never come across a wrestler with a memory for matches in detail like Randy Lewis. This is a great book that will entertain you like the matches of Randy Lewis.
Randy Lewis
Rapid City, South Dakota
Three-time state champion
1977 Junior World champion
University of Iowa
1978 NCAA Runner-Up – 126 lbs.
1979 NCAA National champion – 126 lbs.
1980 NCAA National champion – 134 lbs.
Four-time All American
1980 Olympian – 136.5 lbs.
1984 Olympic Gold medalist – 136.5 lbs.
The author, Bahn Johnston, also wrote the book Rick Sanders in the moment. Sanders was a two-time Olympic silver medalist and the first World champion in American history that Randy Lewis was compared to with an unorthodox and funky wrestling style.

A great night of Iowa Wrestling
I always like to give myself a little time after a big dual meet before I write about it. I like to go over my memories of past dual meets and all of the great memories I have of Iowa Wrestling from over the years.
Simply put, Iowa defeating Oklahoma State 21-16 last night was special even by Iowa Wrestling standards.
I have been going to Iowa Wrestling meets in Carver-Hawkeye Arena since it opened on January 3, 1983. Last night will take its place as one of the best.
Everything was set up for a great night:
Last dual meet of the year in sold out legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa vs. Oklahoma State. A great rivalry between the two most successful programs in college wrestling history.
The meet was in primetime and the last dual meet of the college wrestling season. The entire country was watching on BTN.
Letterwinners of the past for Iowa Wrestling formed a tunnel for the Iowa wrestlers to walk through to get to the mat. The Letterwinners were also recognized at intermission.
On paper it looked like Iowa had their work cut out for them to win the dual meet. An upset would be needed to win the dual meet.
True freshman Angelo Ferrari provided the upset at 184 with a thrilling overtime win over #3 ranked previously undefeated Dustin Plott, 6-3 SV1.
Last night had it all for Iowa Wrestling. You will not hear a wrestling crowd as loud as what Carver-Hawkeye Arena was last night. The Hawks entertained on the mat and the Iowa Wrestling fans let them know by being heard.
You cannot beat the entertainment of a wrestling dual meet. Every one of the ten matches was a battle and the Hawks left it all on the mat. Fans cannot ask for more.
Stephan Buchanan getting a tilt for the major decision at the end with the match and dual meet secured was as Iowa Wrestling as it gets. Maybe there are college wrestlers out there that will want to follow the path that Buchanan has taken.
I believe it is safe to say that Angelo Ferrari is even better than advertised as the overall #1 recruit in the country.
Any recruit watching that dual meet and hearing that crowd has to imagine what it would be like to be on that mat like Ferrari was in the Black and Gold of Iowa Wrestling.
I would also think that last night would inspire existing and potentially new donors to contribute to Iowa Wrestling in this new era of NIL. How could it not?
As fans we had the Nebraska and Oklahoma State dual meets this season that were incredibly entertaining. As a fan I am grateful.
These are the type of dual meets that will lead to Iowa being sold out from season tickets sales in early November for an unbelievable fifth straight year next season.
What a great event to be a part of.
Thank you Iowa Wrestling for an incredible dual meet that provided amazing entertainment for so many.
Now onward to Big Tens and Nationals.
Let’s get ‘em in the middle.
