Iowa Women win Soldier Salute with 5 champs
The University of Iowa Women’s Wrestling team captured the Soldier Salute team title in Coralville with five champs and also had five wrestlers place second. Iowa actually had a sixth wrestler bring home a title with Jaycee Foeller winning the title at 191 as Unattached.
Sterling Dias (101), Ava Bayless (109), Brianna Gonzalez (116), Bella Mir (155), and Haley Ward all won titles in dominating style. The five champs combined won by a fall or tech fall in all but one match contested over the tournament.
Placing second for the Hawks: Bella Ngo (123), Emily Frost (130), Lily Luft (136), Reese Larramendy (143), and Alivia White (191).
The high number of tech falls and pins over the two day-tournament added up to Iowa scoring 223 points.
Several highly ranked wrestlers did not compete this weekend and Iowa still scored 223 points.
The Hawks will be back in action next weekend at National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Friday and Saturday, Jan 5-6. Iowa will hopefully be at full force and the competition will be fierce. This will definitely be the biggest test of the year for Iowa to date. I will have a preview of National Duals next week.

Iowa Women put 10 in the semifinals of Soldier Salute
After a full day of wrestling the University of Iowa Women’s Wrestling team put ten wrestlers into the semifinals at Soldier Salute in Coralville. Our ten semifinalists did not go a single full match on the day. Every match contested was won by a tech fall or fall. That is a dominating statistic.
The Hawks were 23-6 in preliminary pool competition in the first round.
This was the first competition of the season for Bella Mir at 155 who made the semifinals after recording two pins, a tech fall and receiving a forfeit.
We will have teammates clashing in the semifinals at 136 with Lilly Luft facing Anakya Besco.
This tournament provides a great format for Hawkeye fans to see both our men’s and women’s programs compete and I am expecting a good crowd tomorrow.

Soldier Salute: Hawks put 12 in the semifinals
After the first day of competition at Soldier Salute the Iowa Hawkeyes have twelve wrestlers in the semifinals. The Hawks put a lot of points on the board in the early rounds and overall it was a real good day for the program.
The most anticipated match for me in the semifinals will be Drake Ayala vs. Patrick McKee of Minnesota at 125. Ayala dropped several matches to McKee in the past but I look for Ayala to win this match.
Iowa has three wrestlers in the semifinals at 133 with teammates Brody Teske vs. Kale Petersen and the other match is Cullan Schriever vs. Jacob Van dee of Nebraska. The highest placer will be tough to beat for the varsity spot for the rest of the season.
#1 Real Woods will meet #18 Josh Koderhandt of Navy in the semifinals at 141. Woods is fun to watch.
At 149 #8 Victor Voinovich and Caleb Rathjen will face off in the semifinals. Both of these wrestlers are looking to be in top form and I look for a great match. Anthony Ferrari will meet Alek Martin of South Dakota State in the other semifinals match. Very similar to 133 where the winner of the bracket will be tough to keep out of the varsity lineup the rest of the season.
#2 Jared Franek will face Jason Krassier of Iowa State in the semifinals at 157.
#7 Michael Caliendo and Patrick Kennedy are one win away from meeting in the 165 finals. I hope we see that match. Kennedy is looking real solid and I pick him to win this weight class tomorrow.
Gabe Arnold is wrestling unattached and is in the semifinals at 174 where he will face Elise Brown Ton of Nebraska.
At 197 #17 Zach Glazier continues to impress where he will face Garrett Joles of Minnesota in the semifinals at 197. The talk of the entire tournament is A.J. Ferrari who will be in the other semifinal match against Joey Novak of Wyoming.
The level of competition will go up quite a bit tomorrow and I am looking forward to some entertaining wrestling.
The wrestling begins at 11 AM tomorrow.
Soldier Salute will be live streamed on Big+.
Steven Grace and Mark Ironside will call the action on AM 800 KXIC and YouTube.

Soldier Salute preview
The University of Iowa Men’s and Women’s Wrestling teams will be competing at Soldier Salute on Friday and Saturday, December 29-30. The action will take place in Xtreme Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
This is the second year of Soldier Salute and it has grown quite a bit already. Former Iowa Hawkeye NCAA Finalist Luke Eustice is in charge and I have no doubt this will be a great tournament and continue to grow every year.
There are fifteen teams and Unattached listed for the men’s tournament. The women’s tournament has ten teams and Unattached listed to compete.
I am expecting the entire roster to be competing for Iowa this weekend for the men’s team.
We will have former Iowa Hawkeye wrestlers returning to the area as a head coach. Ned Shuck is the head coach at Bellarmine, a D-I college in Louisville, Kentucky. Shuck has been the head coach since 2021. He competed at Iowa from 2000-2005.
Doug Schwab has been the head coach at UNI since 2010. As an Iowa Hawkeye Schwab was an NCAA National champion in 1999 and a three-time All American before becoming a 2008 Olympian.
Kevin Dresser has been the head coach at Iowa State since 2017. As a Hawk Dresser was an NCAA National champion in 1986 and a two-time All American.
Soldier Salute will be live streamed on Big+ and TrackWrestling will have live results.
Steven Grace and Mark Ironside will call the action on AM 800 KXIC and YouTube.
