Former Hawks to be inducted into Glen Brand HOF
Iowa Wrestling is well represented in the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame Class of 2025.
Former Hawkeye wrestlers Daniel Dennis, Felicity Taylor and the 1986 NCAA National championship team were chosen to be inducted for the Class of 2025.
The Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame is a part of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa that honors Iowans that made an impact as a wrestler, coach, or contributor to wrestling.
A banquet honoring the Class of 2025 will be held at Prairie Links Golf & Event Center in Waverly, Iowa, on June 20, 2025.
For more information, contact the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum at (319) 233-0745 or dgmstaff@nwhof.org.
Daniel Dennis was an NCAA National Runner-up for Iowa in 2010 and a 2016 Olympian for Team USA. Felicity Taylor won a 2024 national title for Iowa to lead the Hawks to a team title in the first year of the program.
The 1986 NCAA championship Iowa Wrestling team is one of the greatest in the history of the sport. They scored 158 points with 8 NCAA Qualifiers. Five national champions, a runner up and two placewinners that won a national title the next year. Amazing team.
Congratulations to all the Hawkeyes for being inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame.
From Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame:
Daniel Dennis, a native of Grant, Illinois, was a two-time Illinois state finalist for Grant Community High School while also winning two conference titles. He had a career record of 153-28 and set school records for most wins, most technical falls, and most team points earned. Dennis was a two-time All-American for the University of Iowa, finishing seventh in 2009 and second in 2010. After not wrestling for several years, Dennis returned to the mat and demonstrated his perseverance by earning the opportunity to wrestle for the United States in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He was also a University Nationals Freestyle champion and won both the Grand Prix of Germany and the Grand Prix of Spain. Dennis is currently the head coach of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club.
Felicity Taylor, a native of Spillville, Iowa, is a trailblazer in women’s wrestling. Competing for McKendree University, she won the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships in 2021 while reaching the national finals four times and helping the Bearcats win three NCWWC team titles. After transferring to the University of Iowa, Taylor capped off her career with her second national title in 2024. She concluded her collegiate career as a two-time national champion and five-time finalist. Taylor also succeeded on the international level, competing for the United States in the U23 World Championships in 2019 and 2022 and as a member of the Senior National Team in 2022 and 2024. She remains a passionate advocate for wrestling and has dedicated herself to mentoring and empowering the next generation of wrestlers at Big Game Wrestling Club in North Liberty, Iowa.
The University of Iowa Wrestling Team was dominant in 1985-86, compiling a 16-1 record and winning its ninth consecutive national title in record-breaking fashion. Despite not having a wrestler competing at 118 pounds and heavyweight, the Hawkeyes scored 158 team points — the most in history at the time — and crowned five national champions while outpacing second-place Oklahoma by 73.25 points. Led by head coach Dan Gable and assistant coaches Mark Johnson and Keith Mourlam, Iowa also secured its 13th straight Big Ten title. The Hawkeyes champions were Brad Penrith at 126, Kevin Dresser at 142, Jim Heffernan at 150, Marty Kistler at 167, and Duane Goldman 1st at 190. The other place-winners were Greg Randall, 2nd at 134, Royce Alger, 5th at 158, and Rico Chiapparelli, 4th at 177.

3 Hawks to be Grand March Escorts
For wrestling fans in Iowa the Grand March before the Iowa High School State Wrestling Finals is special.
All of the placewinners march around the three state finals mats to the Olympic theme. This is a rite of passage for the wrestlers and incredible wrestling tradition we have here in Iowa. The Grand March will give you chills every single year.
Each Grand March is led by the Grand March Escort. This is reserved as an honor for a former wrestler and/or coach that left their mark on the history of wrestling in Iowa.
The Grand Marshal Escorts for the 2025 Iowa High School State Tournament will be Tom Brands, Kevin Dresser and Doug Schwab.
The Grand March is scheduled for 5:15 PM on Saturday, February 22 in Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Iowa Hawkeye two-time NCAA champion Matt McDonough will be inducted into the Class of 2025 Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame before the State Finals.
Great choice by the Iowa High School Athletic Association for their choices of Grand Marshall Escorts.
I have been fortunate enough to follow the career of all three of these guys since high school to the present day.
These three wrestlers have a lot in common:
All three won an Iowa state wrestling title in 2A.
All three were an NCAA National champions for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
All three are a Division I wrestling head coach here in Iowa.
Tom Brands
State champion at Sheldon in 1986
3-time NCAA National champion at Iowa (134 lbs.) (1990, ‘91 and ‘92)
Three-time Big Ten Champion
1993 World Champion

Head Wrestling Coach at the University of Iowa since 2006
Won four NCAA National titles as head coach at Iowa(2008, 2009, 2010 and 2021)
Kevin Dresser

A good weekend for Iowa Wrestling
The Iowa Hawkeyes had a good weekend with Big Ten wins over Minnesota and Northwestern.
On Friday the Hawks downed #5 Minnesota, 23-11. Joey Cruz continues to impress with a 7-4 SV1 win over #13 Cooper Flynn. Cruz has a motor and conditioning. Now he is adding finishes to takedowns and confidence to the mix. Great to see.
Michael Caliendo…wow. Caliendo won by a 21-4 tech fall over #11 Andrew Sparks and made it look easy. That would be a typical match in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
I am confident in Kyle Parco at 149 and Jacori Teemer at 157. These guys have been through this process before. The low scoring matches do not bother me, especially against ranked wrestlers. These guys are gamers that I look to pick it up a big notch come tournament time. As I said, I am confident.
Stephan Buchanan has been money all season and the best wrestler on the team. Sure looks like a national champion to me.
I feel as though the match at 184 against Minnesota where he lost 4-1, SV1 was a turning point for Gabe Arnold. I believe he is already better from that match. It was easy to see that Arnold was clearly outsized by an opponent that is undefeated and having a great year.
More than anything Gabe Arnold needs confidence. That can be challenging for any freshman in the Big Ten facing top competition especially when giving up size every match. Arnold has the goods to score takedowns. With confidence and execution, it will happen.
The same thing can be said about Ben Kueter and Miguel Estrada. The goods are there. With confidence and execution, it will happen. Those are three guys to build a program around.
On Sunday Iowa topped Northwestern 37-3. It was great to see Nelson Brands come out and get the tech fall at 174. I also liked the 7-3 decision by Jesse Ybarra at 133 and the 9-0 major by Cullan Schriever at 141.
Ben Kueter lit up the scoreboard with a 20-4 tech fall and Gabe Arnold had a 13-2 major decision.
Miguel Estrada dropped a 4-1 SV1 decision to #9 Trevor Chumbley. True freshman wrestling up a weight for the team against the #9 wrestler in the country. Lot of potential here.
There were a lot of good things to see out of the Iowa Wrestling program with the two Big Ten wins over the weekend.
Tom Brands likes to use “Respond” to describe the ability to come back when a match or dual meet did not go your way. We saw Iowa Wrestling “Respond” from the Nebraska dual meet and get better especially at finishing takedowns.
Now it is on to Oklahoma State. All of the rankings have Iowa and Oklahoma State #2 or #3. Long standing rivalry. Live on BTN in primetime. The sold out crowd in Carver-Hawkeye Arena will show why they are the best fans, by far. Cannot wait.
As I am always saying Iowa Wrestling is my entertainment. I was entertained this past weekend. I plan on being entertained Sunday night.
Let’s get ‘em in the middle.
