Ryder Block of Waverly-Shell Rock (Iowa) committed to the Hawks following the huge recruiting weekend in October of 2021. I kept saying that Block was underrated last year. That is not the case this year. Block is a member of the Class of 2023 that I have claimed to be the best recruiting class in the history of Iowa Wrestling.

Block is a two-time state champion and a runner-up at WSR. He looked great in winning a Junior national title in freestyle in Fargo this summer at 138. Now the rankings have arrived. Block is currently #3 at 138 by MatScouts after being ranked #1 this fall.

I see Block being at 141-149 for his career. It is always a guess as to how much a wrestler will grow and develop. Regardless of the weight, Block has a familiar background for recent recruits. He is from Iowa and Sebolt trained (SWA).

I believe Block has a real good to great future in store in the Black and Gold of Iowa. He has the combination of the skill set, background, work ethic, and the life long desire to be a Hawkeye.

InterMat released their new rankings. There were no changes to the team rankings for tournament or dual meet. It is still Penn State-Iowa for 1-2 in both the Tournament and Dual rankings. The point totals did change. Iowa gained four points and is now at 84 points behind Penn State who remained at 100. 

The addition of four team points is from Nelson Brands returning to the lineup at 174 and is now ranked #15. Iowa was not ranked at 174 before this. After a pin over at the time #10 ranked Anthony Artalona of Penn in the dual meet Saturday, Cobe Siebrecht went from #29 to #25 at 157. I look for Brands and Siebrecht to continue to climb in the rankings as the season goes on. 

All of the other Iowa wrestlers remained the same in the rankings from last week. The Hawks are led by #1 ranked Spencer Lee and #2 ranked Real Woods and Jacob Warner. Tony Cassioppi is ranked #4, Max Murin is #6 and Abe Assad at #8. 

Brody Teske stayed at #12 and Patrick Kennedy remained at #13. 

Iowa will host Iowa State in legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday, December 4 at 1:30 PM before a sellout crowd.

The Hawks look to keep the tradition going of having a top flight wrestler at 125 with incoming recruit Nate Jesuroga of Southeast Polk HS (Pleasant Hill, Iowa). Jesuroga is just what you want for a recruit. Toughness, technique, conditioning, work ethic, he has it all. Jesuroga is a member of the Class of 2023 that I have claimed to be the best recruiting class in the history of Iowa Wrestling.

Jesuroga is a two-time state champion and placed third as a freshman. What put Jesuroga high on the recruiting lists was when he won a Bronze medal at the 2021 Cadet World Freestyle Championships in Budapest, Hungary. He also won a coveted Super 32 title. Last summer Jesuroga crushed the competition in winning a Junior Freestyle title at 120 lbs. That is an impressive list of credentials.

I look for the torch at 125 for the Hawks to be passed from Spencer Lee to Drake Ayala to Nate Jesuroga. I believe we will see Jesuroga/Ayala at 125/133 for Iowa in the future. What a way to start the Big Tens, NCAA National Tournament, or any dual meet with those two Iowa homegrown Sebolt (SWA) trained wrestlers.

Incoming recruits Ben Kueter and Gabe Arnold will be teammates at City High (Iowa City, Iowa) this season. That is two big recruits on the same team for Hawk fans to be following. Kueter and Arnold are members of the Class of 2023 that I have claimed to be the best recruiting class in the history of Iowa Wrestling.

I have been calling Kueter the best all around athlete of any incoming Iowa Wrestling recruit that I have ever seen since the day he committed. Kueter committed to both Iowa Wrestling and Iowa Football on September 19, 2021.

Kueter has pretty much done it all. He is a three-time undefeated (72-0) state champion going into his senior year. He just wrapped up a great career in football. He is a finalist for the Butkus Award as the top high school linebacker in the country and was named USA Today Network’s All-Iowa Male Athlete of the Year for 2021-2022.

Last summer Kueter won the Gold at the 2022 U20 World Freestyle Championships in Sophie, Bulgaria at 97 kg/213 lbs. Kueter recorded a fall in 1:40 for the title. To add to the accomplishment Kueter was the youngest competitor in his bracket.

I am not sure what else I can say about this recruit other than he is ranked #2 at 220 and #2 overall in the MatScouts P4P rankings. We have a real gem here.

Gabe Arnold competed for national powerhouse Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania last season. Arnold was a 14U and 16U national champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Arnold is ranked #6 at 182 by MatScouts.

Arnold is a really powerful wrestler that I believe is under ranked. This recruit has a high ceiling and just may make a run at being varsity next season for the Hawks as a true freshman. Ton of potential.

Arnold moved in from Georgia and will be in the lineup with Kueter for the Little Hawks. I am sure more than a few Iowa Wrestling fans will be watching City High to see two of our incoming recruits this season.

Six members of the Iowa Wrestling team competed at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa. Five Hawks placed. Kolby Franklin (2nd at 197), Joel Jesuroga (3rd at 149), Aiden Riggins (3rd at 157), Gage Marty (3rd at Hwt), and Brad Hill (4th at Hwt). Jace Rhodes did not place at 133.

The Iowa Hawkeyes will face #21 Penn inside legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena Saturday at 2 PM. All home dual meets were a pre-season sellout. 

The biggest matchup will be at 149 where #6 Max Murin will face #10 Doug Zapf. The match I am most looking forward to is at 133. Iowa has Cullan Schriever listed to face #10 Michael Colaiocco. I believe Schriever has a lot of potential and this will be a great opportunity to see where he is at on the national level. 

The Hawks have both Caleb Rathjen and #29 Cobe Siebrecht listed at 157 to face #10 Anthony Artalona. As with 133 this will give a good look at where we are nationally.

Iowa wrestling events are broadcast by AM-800 KXIC and streamed on hawkeyesports.com via YouTube. The dual will be streamed live on B1G+ with former Hawkeyes Alex Marinelli and Kaleb Young on the call. It is a paid subscription service.

InterMat released their new rankings. There were not a lot of changes for the Hawks. There were changes in the team race. It is still Penn State – Iowa for 1-2 in both the Tournament and Dual rankings. We do have new teams ranked in #3 Arizona State and #4 Michigan for Tournament and #3 Ohio State and #4 Arizona State for Dual. 

The Hawks are led by #1 ranked Spencer Lee and #2 ranked Real Woods and Jacob Warner. Tony Cassioppi is ranked #4, Max Murin is up one spot to #6 and Abe Assad at #8. 

Brody Teske stayed at #12 and Patrick Kennedy remained at #13. Cobe Siebrecht made his first appearance in the rankings at #29 at 157. Iowa is not ranked at 174.

We saw Cullan Schriever compete last weekend for the Hawks at 133 for all three dual meets. Schriever won a 2-0 decision over Army followed by a 20-13 decision over Sacred Heart and a 23-8 tech fall over Buffalo. Schriever is now 7-0 for the year. 

I see the battle to last through the season between Schriever and Teske. I believe that by March both Teske and Schriever will have the ability to score points and become an All American at the NCAA National Tournament at 133.

Jace Rhodes and Joel Jesuroga won titles at the Lindenwood Open in St. Charles, Missouri. Rhodes won by a fall in 2:20 over Shay Korhorn of Bellarmine University to win the title at 133 in the Fresh/Soph division. Also in the Fresh/Soph division Joel Jesuroga won the title at 149 with a 3-2 decision over Paul West (Unattached).

Rhodes, a true freshman from Mason City, Iowa won a title at the Luther Open last weeknd and now has an 8-0 record for the year. Jesuroga is a true freshman from Pleasant Hill, Iowa (SE Polk HS).

Kolby Franklin placed third in the Open division at 197. Bretli Reyna did not place at 149. In the fresh/Soph division Gage Marty placed third (Hwt) and Easton Fleshman (Hwt) did not place.

All of the Hawks except Reyna (sophomore) that competed are true freshman and members of the Recruiting Class of 2022.

The University of Iowa Women’s Wrestling team made a bold statement in their first tournament of the season at the Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, Missouri.  Iowa sent seven wrestlers to the tournament and walked away with five champs and two runner-ups. Only head to head matchups of teammates kept Iowa from having more champs.

In battles of teammates, at 101 Sterling Dias won by a 3-1 decision over Emile Gonzalez. At 109 Nyla Valencia won by a 6-5 decision over Brianna Gonzalez. Felicity Taylor (116), Nanea Estrella (136), and Ressie Larramendy (143) also won titles for the  Hawks.

The stats showed domination by the Lady Hawks. Our five champs were a combined 36-0 and outscored their opponents 284-24.

The Iowa Women’s wrestling team will officially begin competition next season for the 2023-’24 season. Our wrestlers can compete as unattached in tournaments this year. I am hoping to see all of our wrestlers compete in person at the Soldier Salute on December 29-30 in Coralville, Iowa.

It is impossible not to be excited about what we have to follow with the Iowa Women’s wrestling program.

Go Hawks!

The University of Iowa Women’s Wrestling team will have seven wrestlers competing at the Missouri Valley Open. Action will begin at Noon today. On Saturday the wrestling will begin at 9 AM in the Burns Athletic Complex in Marshall, Missouri.

I have been waiting for a competition to follow our Women’s team and here we go. The Lady Hawks officially begin competing next year but they can compete unattached this season.

I am hoping we see more and more of our Hawks competing in tournaments like this. I am past ready to watch and follow Iowa Women’s Wrestling.
