Results for Iowa recruits in action: Dec 10-11

It was a good weekend for Iowa Wrestling recruits. Jace Rhodes, Ryder Block, Aiden Riggins, and Ben Kueter all won tournaments. Nate Jesuroga, Joel Jesuroga, Carter Martinson, Carson Martinson, and Drake Rhodes were all undefeated in dual meet tournaments.

The stat that sticks out to me would be Carter Martinson of Southeast Polk. At the Bobcat Duals Martinson was 4-0 with four first period pins in 1:05, :23, :36, and :25. That is taking care of business in a hurry. Carson Martinson was also 4-0 with four pins. Nate Jesuroga and Ben Kueter were both 4-0 with three pins and a tech fall for the day. Drake Rhodes was 7-0 with six pins and a tech fall.

I was impressed with Kolby Franklin of Wyoming Seminary. Franklin competed up at Hwt at the Walsh Ironman, the toughest high school tournament in the country every year. Franklin fought hard and had a good performance by placing second to the #1 P4P /#1 Hwt in the country.

Iowa Assistant Wrestling Coach Ryan Morningstar was in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio for the Ironman again this year. The Ironman is always a hotbed for college wrestling recruiting.

I will do my best to bring you results this season for all of our incoming recruits right here on my blog.

The future looks great for Iowa Wrestling.

Iowa recruits in action: Dec 10-11

Incoming Iowa Wrestling recruits will be in action in four different states this weekend. Five future Hawks will be competing in the Des Moines area on Saturday. Aiden Riggins, Ryder Block, and Jace Rhodes will be competing in the Johnston Invitational in Johnston. Ben Kueter and Mickey Griffith will be at the Saydel Invitational in Des Moines.

Kolby Franklin will be at the Walsh Ironman in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The Ironman has been considered the toughest high school regular season tournament for years. 585 wrestlers from 23 states will be competing as only the best individuals from far away states will enter the tournament. More than 150 wrestlers competing are ranked or honorable mention in national rankings. That is impressive.

Iowa Assistant Wrestling Coach Ryan Morningstar will be in attendance as always. Coach Morningstar has been at the Ironman every season for years as it is a hotbed for D-I college recruiting.

Drake Rhodes will kick off his senior season at the Mining City Duals on Friday and Saturday.

Iowa in new InterMat Rankings

InterMat has released their new rankings today after a big weekend of college wrestling. The Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and numerous dual meets across the country changed the rankings a bit. Iowa is still ranked number one for both the tournament and dual meet rankings but their lead shrunk. In the November 22 InterMat rankings they had Iowa 17.5 points ahead of #2 Penn State (121-103.5). Now it is just a 5 point difference between Iowa and Penn State of 112-107.

The Hawks have nine wrestlers ranked in the top eight.

Compared to the November 22 rankings (1) Lee, (3) DeSanto, (2) Eierman, and (2) Kemerer all stayed the same. Murin went from 12 to 8, Young 6 to 8, Marinelli 2 to 1, Warner 3 to 7, and Cassioppi 3 to 6. Myles Wilson is at 28 and Nelson Brands dropped out the rankings at 184.

Iowa is back on the mat next at the Rokfin Duals on December 20-21 in Destin, Florida.

Iowa recruits in action: Dec 3-4 – Results

The first big weekend of high school wrestling is in the books. It was a good weekend for Iowa Wrestling recruits who competed at competitive tournaments.

The best performance has to go to Ben Kueter who won the 220 lbs. title at the Dan Gable Donnybrook. After two first period pins and two tech falls, Kueter faced off with Minnesota commit Gavin Nelson of Simley (MN) in the finals. Nelson placed fifth at the 2021 Cadet World Freestyle Championships (92kg/202 lbs.) and is ranked #3 at 195 by MatScouts. Kueter scored a takedown in overtime to win 3-1 (SV-1). Kueter is much bigger than last year and was just named as the Cedar Rapids Gazette Area Player of the Year in football.

Aiden Riggins and Ryder Block of Waverly-Shell Rock also won the Donnybrook and looked very good. Block is at 138 while being ranked #13 nationally at 132. Block defeated #25 (at 132) Chase DeBlaere (Simley) 3-2 in the finals. Brad Hill competed at 195 at the Donnybrook and placed 5th with a 4-1 record. Hill is ranked #9 in the country at 220 by MatScouts and won a state title at 220 last season.

Nate and Joel Jesuroga and Carter Martinson won titles at the Gardner Edgerton Invitational. Nate Jesuroga is ranked #1 nationally at 120 but competed at 126.

Iowa recruits in action: Dec 3-4

This is the huge opening weekend across the country for high school wrestling. It will be great to have a normal high school season with fans in the bleachers and a full slate of competition.

All of the incoming Iowa Wrestling recruits are in action except Drake Rhodes who will have his season start next week. For wrestling fans in eastern Iowa there will be some great local tournaments to see our recruits compete.

The big news of opening weekend is the inaugural Dan Gable Donnybrook on Friday and Saturday. 32 teams from Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin will be competing. The tournament is being held in the impressive Xtreme Arena just off of I-80 in Coralville about a mile from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

We will see some great competition at all of the weights but I am really looking forward to the action at 220. We will see incoming Iowa recruits Ben Kueter (ranked #4 in the country at 220) and #9 Brad Hill of Bettendorf. Also at 220 is #12 Andrew Blackburn (Lockport) and #15 Jake Walker of Waverly-Shell Rock. When you add in the rest of the field that is some serious competition to get the year started at 220.

Iowa recruits Aiden Riggins and Ryder Block of Waverly-Shell Rock will also be competing at the Donnybrook. The finals of the Donnybrook will be shown live on Mediacom at 5 PM Saturday.

I will do my best to bring you results this season for all of our incoming Iowa Wrestling recruits right here on my blog.

The future looks great for Iowa Wrestling.

Iowa State preview

When you are an Iowa Wrestling fan you circle the Iowa-Iowa State dual meet on the schedule right away when it comes out. Iowa-Iowa State is always a big deal in the wrestling crazy state of Iowa.

#1 ranked Iowa will travel to Ames to do battle with #13 Iowa State in Hilton Coliseum at 6 PM CST on Sunday. You can expect this intense rivalry to entertain wrestling fans. With the coaching staff at Iowa State consisting of three former Iowa NCAA national champions in Kevin Dresser, Brett Metcalf, and Derek St. John the rivalry may have gone up another notch.

For Iowa fans we have to be wondering if we will see the entire varsity lineup in the Black and Gold. I have no inside information but I can only guess that we will see a majority of the starters in the lineup. Of course you have to start with Spencer Lee who has not appeared in competition yet this year. I would think it would take a specific situation for Lee or any of the Iowa varsity wrestlers to not compete in this dual meet. Especially for the seniors in their last Iowa-Iowa State dual meet.

Yes I do believe we will see Lee compete in his last Iowa-Iowa State dual meet. I will put Michael Kemerer on that list as well. The only starter that I do not believe we will see is Max Murin at 149 who is out with an injury. Cobe Siebrecht is ready to go at 149.

I believe every other starter will be in the lineup. Hey, it’s time and I want to see the full firepower of Iowa Wrestling out on the mat in Hilton in the Iowa-Iowa State dual meet on Sunday.

That would mean we would see Jacob Warner in the lineup at 197. Warner competed at the Luther Open but has missed the first two dual meets with an injury. I do not know who we see at 184 for the Hawks. If I had to guess I would say Myles Wilson. Abe Assad has been out the first two dual meets. Iowa State will have #12 Marcus Coleman.

Iowa State will put seven ranked wrestlers out on the mat with #1 ranked and defending national champion David Carr at 157. Carr will face #8 Kaleb Young in the biggest matchup of ranked wrestlers in the meet. At 141 we may see #2 Jaydin Eierman vs. #6 Ian Parker.

The Iowa-Iowa State dual will be streamed live on ESPNt in a subscription service.

There is an HWC Social in Ames before the dual meet.

I am expecting an intense and competitive dual meet that will entertain wrestling fans.

I cannot wait.
