Iowa recruits in new rankings

After three weeks of competition across the country in high school wrestling, Willie Saylor of MatScouts has updated his rankings.  There were a lot of changes in the rankings as wrestlers settled into their new weight class and results came in. The incoming Iowa recruits have looked very good so far this season.

Nate Jesuroga remained at #3 in the P4P (Pound For Pound) rankings and is now #1 at 126 instead of 120. Ben Kueter went from #4 to #3 at 220 and went up one spot to #24 in the P4P.

Aiden Riggins went from #2 to #1 at 160. I was able to see Riggins compete and he looks college ready right now. Brad Hill remained #20 at 195. Ryder Block remained #14 at 138. Mickey Griffith went from #16 to #17 at 182.

Easton Fleshman went from #15 to #18 at Hwt. Carter Martinson went from unranked to #17 at 152. I have been really impressed with both Carter and Carson Martinson this season.

Kolby Franklin and Joel Jesuroga dropped out of the rankings.

The future looks great for Iowa Wrestling.

Hawkeye Open replaces Midlands – Cancelled

The Hawkeye Open scheduled for Sunday, January 2 has been cancelled.

The bad news hit social media Wednesday afternoon that the 2021 Midlands Championships was canceled. In a very quick turn of events it was announced just hours later that the Hawkeye Open would be held on January 1-2 at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville, Iowa. The Hawkeye Open will be held for any post high school men and women who want to compete.

The Hawkey Open is being presented by Wrestle Like a Girl and the Iowa City Area Sports Commission.

There are three big reasons why I expect the Hawkeye Open will be a big success with such a short amount of time to prepare.

  1. Josh Schamberger and Luke Eustice are running the tournament. Schamberger was very influential in getting the 2018 World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Eustice was an NCAA Finalist at Iowa and worked in administration for Iowa Wrestling for years. Dan Gable told me numerous times that you want wrestling people making decisions about wrestling. Schamberger and Eustice are running this show and are wrestling people to a high degree. I have a lot of confidence in these two guys and for good reason.
  2. Xtreme Arena in Coralville is a great new facility and in a great location right off of I-80. Just a mile from legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the epicenter of wrestling in our country. Iowa City knows how to host a wrestling event better than anywhere on planet Earth.
  3. Iowa Head Coach Tom Brands said he will bring his wrestlers. That alone will attract wrestlers from around the country.

I am looking forward to seeing the women’s wrestling just as much as the men. I am hoping some of our wrestlers on Team USA make the trip to compete here in Iowa.

A new account on Twitter for you to follow: https://twitter.com/HawkeyeOpen

I will keep you up to date right here on my blog as I know more.

What a great opportunity for the people of Iowa to flex and show once again that wrestling is our sport.

Let’s get ‘em in the middle.

It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Hawks go 3-0 at Collegiate Duals

Top ranked Iowa was 3-0 at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Niceville Florida. The Hawks defeated #5 North Carolina State in the finals of the Blue Pool, 19-15. Austin DeSanto led the way with a 16-7 major decision. Top ranked Spencer Lee defeated #5 Jakob Camacho, 6-1. With Iowa down 13-15, #7 Jacob Warner won a hard fought 3-2 decision over #15 Issac Trumble. Tony Cassioppi secured the dual meet win with a 6-2 decision over Tyrie Houghton.

Iowa won 24 of 30 matches in the three dual meets.

The Hawks scored bonus points in 10 of their 24 wins. 1 pin, 3 tech falls, 4 major decisions, 1 disqualification due to stalling, and 1 injury default.

Spencer Lee extended his winning streak to 38 matches, outscoring those opponents 463-43.

Iowa now has a 24 match winning streak in dual meets.  The longest active streak in the country.

A special mention in regards to the depth of the Iowa Wrestling program. In the North Carolina State dual at 149 Cobe Seibrecht dropped a 7-3 match to #3 Tariq Wilson and scored the last takedown. At 174 Nelson Brands dropped a 4-2 decision to #5 Hayden Hidlay.

Michael Kemerer weighed in but did not compete in the duals.

Hawks go 2-0, NCST preview

Iowa looked impressive in defeating Central Michigan and Lehigh at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Niceville Florida. The Hawks will face #6 North Carolina State at 5 PM CST today.

Iowa won 18 of 20 bouts on Monday. In the first meet Iowa shutout Central Michigan 44-0. The Hawks scored bonus points in six of their ten victories. Abe Assad recorded a pin in 2:22, Spencer Lee and Austin DeSanto recorded tech falls, Alex Marinelli won by disqualification due to stalling, Tony Cassioppi won by an injury default, and Max Murin won by a major decision.

Iowa then defeated #21 Lehigh 28-7. Austin DeSanto recorded another tech fall and Spencer Lee and Abe Assad won a major decision. In the biggest match #6 Tony Cassioppi defeated #8 Jordan Wood, 3-2.

The North Carolina State dual meet should be entertaining with some very good matches. The top match for me will be at 184 where unranked Abe Assad will face #3 Trent Hidlay. Also a big test for #8 Max Murin at 149 with #3 Tariq Wilson.

Michael Kemerer weighed in but did not compete on Monday. I do not expect to see him wrestle today. I would be surprised if Spencer Lee wrestled today. That would still have a matchup of ranked wrestlers at 6 of 10 weights. That should make for a very good dual meet.

Ranked opponents at Collegiate Wrestling Duals

Iowa will be competing in the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Niceville, Florida today and tomorrow. Iowa will face Central Michigan at 6 PM and Lehigh at 8 PM later today. With two wins Iowa will probably face the winner of #6 North Carolina State and #10 Missouri at 5 PM Tuesday. All times are CST.

I made a list of all the potential ranked wrestlers that Iowa will face. Tony Cassioppi at Hwt will have the toughest competition for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Cassioppi will face ranked opponents in all three dual meets. On the opening day #6 Cassioppi will face #9 Matt Stencil of Central Michigan followed by #8 Jordan Wood of Lehigh. On Tuesday Cassioppi will probably face either #28 Owen Trephan of NCST or #16 Zach Elam of Missouri. This will be great competition for Cassioppi. Each match is important for seedings at the NCAA Tournament.

The opening dual meet against Central Michigan will also find #2 Jaydin Eierman facing #7 Dresden Simon at 141. #8 Kaleb Young will face #19 Johnny Lovett at 157.

There will be several really great matchups for Iowa against either North Carolina State or Missouri. Let’s take care of business today and I will have a preview blog for Iowa’s dual meet on Tuesday.

Results for Iowa recruits in action: Dec 17-18

It was another very good weekend for incoming Iowa Wrestling recruits. Riggins started the tournament by defeating 1A #1 ranked Maximus Magayna 8-2. Riggins later defeated 2A #1 ranked Nicholas Fox by a 14-4 Major Decision. That is a great day for Riggins who makes Hawkeye fans more excited about his future with every passing tournament.

Ryder Block was 5-0 for the day at the Battle of Waterloo with three pins, a tech fall, and a major decision. Drake Rhodes was 4-0 with three pins and a 17-2 tech fall in the finals to win the CMR Holiday Tournament. Easton Fleshman was 4-0 with three pins in winning the Austin Roberts Memorial Tournament.
