Snow forced some changes in Iowa for the wrestling tournaments this weekend. Waverly-Shell Rock changed plans and went to the Solon Invitational where both Aiden Riggins and Ryder Block won titles. 

Ben Kueter won the title at 220 lbs. at the J-Hawk Invitational at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Kueter was named for the Wyatt Schultz Outstanding Wrestler award. Wyatt was from west Cedar Rapids and a supporter of Jefferson Wrestling. Wyatt was the number one source for high school wrestling in Iowa as the owner of The Predicament for decades. Our friend Wyatt is dearly missed.

Brad Hill was 4-0 with two pins, a tech fall, and an injury default at the Bettendorf Midwest Shootout. Easton Fleshman picked up two pins and a forfeit at the Harrisburg Duals in Harrisburg, South Dakota. Drake Rhodes was 4-0 at the Border Wars in Sheridan, Wyoming with three first period pins and a tech fall.

Jace Rhodes, Joel Jesuroga, Nate Jesuroga, Carter Martinson, Carson Martinson, Mickey Griffith, Kolby Franklin, and Gabe Arnold did not compete this weekend.

The Hawks will roll into #18 Illinois for a Big Ten dual meet on Sunday at 3 PM. The Iowa-Illinois dual meet will be televised live on BTN. Iowa looked impressive in a 33-6 win at #11 Northwestern on Friday night and have looked very good the last two dual meets against nationally ranked teams.

The highest ranked wrestler for Illinois is freshman #6 Lucas Byrd at 133. #3 Austin DeSanto has not competed in the last two dual meets. Freshman Cullan Schriever pulled his redshirt and competed against Northwestern where he dropped a 4-3 decision to #9 Chris Cannon. It sounds as though we will see Schriever in the lineup against Byrd. 

#12 Drake Ayala continues to impress at 125 where he defeated #7 Austin DeAugustino of Northwestern, 6-5. Ayala will now face #26 Justin Cardani of Illinois. The best matchup of ranked wrestlers will be at 184. #18 Abe Assad will take on #19 Zac Braunagel. This match will provide Assad an opportunity to show where he is at in the national rankings. I believe Assad is a lot better than #18.

As with every conference dual meet every single match is important for seeds at the Big Tens and NCAA Tournament.  I am expecting another real good performance by the Hawks in this dual meet.

Incoming Iowa wrestling recruits will be hitting the mats this weekend. Jace Rhodes, Mickey Griffith, Aiden Riggins, and Ryder Block will be at the Bob Sharpe Invitational in Ankeny on Saturday. Ben Kueter will be competing at the J-Hawk in Cedar Rapids. Brad Hill will be competing at home at the Bettendorf Midwest Shootout. Drake Rhodes will be at the Border Wars in Sheridan, WY and Easton Fleshman will be at the Harrisburg Duals in Harrisburg, SD.

Several of our recruits do not have anything scheduled for this weekend. After this weekend we are looking at a full slate as we approach conference tournaments and then the tournaments begin to become a state champion. 

Between our recruits in high school and the Hawks, the wrestling season will be at its best for the next two plus months.

The Iowa Hawkeyes will be on the road this weekend with a dual meet at #11 Northwestern on Friday and at #18 Illinois on Sunday. Every single match is important for seedings at the Big Ten Tournament. First up is Iowa-Northwestern at 7 PM Friday that will be streamed live on BIGt.

Iowa has two wrestlers listed at five weights for both dual meets. I do not believe I have ever seen that before in a Big Ten dual meet for Iowa. #3 Austin DeSanto and Charles Matthews are both listed at 133. DeSanto did not wrestle Sunday against Purdue. #2 Jaydin Eierman and Drew Bennett are both listed at 141. #12 Max Murin and Cobe Siebrecht are listed at 149. #2 Michael Kemerer and Brennan Swafford are at 174 and #5 Tony Cassioppi and Aaron Costello at Hwt.

Northwestern has a ranked wrestler listed at eight of the ten weights. There are potential matchups of #12 Drake Ayala – #7 Michael DeAugustino at 125, #3 Austin DeSanto – #9 Chris Cannon at 133, #12 Max Murin – #5 Yahya Thomas at 149, and #12 Kaleb Young – #2 Ryan Deakin at 157. 

Depending on who Iowa puts out on the mat Northwestern may be favored in as many or even more matches than Iowa. Northwestern has the higher ranked wrestler at 125, 149, and 157 regardless of who Iowa puts out there. Should Iowa not put their #1 guy on the mat in any of the other weights we could have a very competitive dual meet.

Pat Lugo of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club will compete at the Henri Deglane Grand Prix in Nice, France. Lugo will be competing at 65 kg/143 lbs. on Friday, January 21.

Lugo, originally from Homestead, Florida, was a two-time All American for the University of Iowa in 2019 and 2020.

The Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa announced the Class of 2022 for induction. Former Iowa Hawkeye greats Joel Sharratt, Jay Borschel, Luke Moffitt, and the Trizzino family were among those selected.

Located inside the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa, the Glen Brand Hall of Fame was established in 2002 to honor native-born Iowans and those who wrestled or coached for an Iowa school who have made an impact on wrestling on a national level or who have done extraordinary work in Iowa.

Joel Sharratt was a state champion from Bloomington-Kennedy High School in Minnesota before becoming a three-time All-American for the University of Iowa. Coached by 2002 Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa inductee Dan Gable, Sharratt advanced to the NCAA finals three times and won a national title in 1994. The two-time captain led the Hawkeyes to Big Ten and NCAA titles in 1995 while also helping Iowa capture national championships in 1992 and 1994. Sharratt was a two-time member of the U.S. National Team, earning the bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Trials and the 1997 Pan American Championships. After stepping off the mat, Sharratt became a graduate assistant at the University Minnesota and the top assistant coach at the United State Naval Academy. He was head coach at the United States Air Force Academy before returning to the Naval Academy as head coach. A native of Bloomington, Minnesota, Sharratt was inducted into the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2011. He currently works as a business development specialist with SAGE Technologies, a certified Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business. Sharratt resides in St. Louis with his fiancé, Cassey Sawnson, and is the proud father of four daughters.

Jay Borschel was a four-time Iowa state high school champion for Linn-Mar High School, the 16th wrestler in state history to win four titles. The Marion, Iowa native won his championships in four different weight classes, marking the greatest span of weight classes by any of the four-time champions. Borschel had a career record of 163-1 with three undefeated seasons and 98 pins. Signed by Tom Brands to wrestle at Virginia Tech, Borschel followed Brands to the University of Iowa, after a redshirt year at Virginia Tech. Borschel was a Big Ten champion and a two-time All-American in three seasons as a starter, helping the Hawkeyes win three Big Ten and NCAA championships while posting a 98-10 career record. He was undefeated as a senior while capturing the 174-pound national title and being named Iowa’s Male Athlete of the Year. Borschel resides in Iowa City, Iowa with his partner, Jillian, and three children, Milo, Wilhelmina and Morrison.

Luke Moffitt wrestled for Estherville High School in Estherville, Iowa, winning an Iowa state high school championship in 1997. Moffitt won a national championship at 141 pounds for Iowa Central Community College before signing with the University of Iowa. Wrestling for Jim Zalesky and Tom Brands, Moffitt was a two-year starter and won the Big Ten Tournament and was named Outstanding Wrestler in 2002. Moffitt received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education and returned to Iowa Central as head coach. In his 18th season, he has a career record of 172-57 and has built the Tritons into a national power. Iowa Central has won seven national titles and has placed in the Top Eight at the NJCAA national tournament 17 consecutive seasons, including 12 Top Three finishes. The Tritons have also won six national dual championships with 31 individual national champions, 49 national finalists and 102 All-Americans. Moffitt has been named National Coach of the Year five times and Regional Coach of the Year 12 times. The Tritons have ruled Region XI, considered to be the top league in junior college wrestling, winning 13 regional team titles and crowning 76 individual champions.

The Trizzino Family, which includes brothers Scott Trizzino and Mark Trizzino and Mark’s sons Nick and Joey, will receive the Bowlsby Family Legacy Award. Scott and Mark were two-time Illinois state high school champions for Joliet Central High School in Joliet, Illinois, and both wrestled at the University of Iowa. Scott was a two-time Big Ten champion and a two-time finalist and three-time All-American while helping the Hawkeyes win four national team championships. Mark was a Big Ten champion and an All-American who also helped Iowa win four national team titles. Scott placed second at the Freestyle Junior Nationals in 1976 while Mark was a runner-up in 1977 and an All-American in 1976 and 1978. Mark’s sons wrestled for Bettendorf High School in Bettendorf, Iowa. Nick was an Iowa state high school champion in 2007 after finishing seventh in 2005 and 2006 while Joey was state runner-up in 2010 after finishing third in 2009 and eighth in 2007. Nick wrestled for Iowa from 2009 to 2014 while Joey wrestled for the Hawkeyes from 2011 to 2013 and for Wartburg College from 2014 to 2017.

The Bowlsby Family Legacy Award is named after the Bowlsby Family from Waterloo. John Bowlsby and Bob Bowlsby wrestled for legendary coach Bob Siddens at Waterloo West High School while their parents, Bob and Pat, and sisters, Ann, Sarah and Jane, were instrumental in their careers.

InterMat released their new rankings today. 

There have been some changes in the rankings in just one week. For starters Drake Ayala debuts in the rankings at 12th at 125. Ayala just defeated #5 at the time Devin Shroder of Purdue 6-1 in the Purdue dual meet Sunday. Ayala will face #7 Michael DeAugustino of Northwestern on Friday.

(3) DeSanto, (2) Eierman, (12) Murin, (12) Young, (1) Marinelli (2) Kemerer, (18) Assad, and (5) Warner all stayed the same in the rankings. I am surprised that Abe Assad stayed ranked #18 at 184. I thought he would move up the rankings a few notches. I believe Assad will do much better than 18th at the NCAA National Tournament. Cassioppi went from #6 to #5 at Hwt.

In the team race Iowa remained at #2 20 points behind #1 Penn State. Iowa was behind Penn State by 21 points in the rankings last week. Michigan gained 22 points in the team race since last week at #3 and are now only 3 points behind Iowa.

Penn State replaced Iowa for #1 in the Dual Meet Rankings as the Hawks drop to #2. Iowa will host Penn State in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday, January 28 at 8 PM CST.

Iowa will be on the road this weekend at #11 Northwestern (January 14) and at #18 Illinois (January 16).

Tom Brands will be the guest speaker at the Johnson County I-Club Wrestling Lunch on Friday, February 4. Doors to the Feller Club Room in Carver-Hawkeye Arena will open at 11:30 AM and the program will begin at 12:10.

I have attended this event in the past and it was a good time and a packed house. I expect an even bigger crowd this year. Iowa Wrestling fans are excited.

Cost is $20 per person and $175 for a reserved table of eight. RSVP by January 28.

It was a big weekend of tough competition for our incoming Iowa wrestling recruits. Jesuroga, Jesuroga, Martinson, and Martinson were at The Cheesehead Invitational in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. Nate Jesuroga was defeated by Nicolar Rivera of Stoughton, WI, 10-6 in the finals at 126. Jesuroga was ranked #1 in the country at 126 and #3 P4P by MatScouts.

Joel Jesuroga won the title at 145, Carter Martinson placed 5th at 152 and Carson Martinson placed third at 160.

At The Clash in La Crosse, WI Aiden Riggins, Ryder Block, and Brad Hill were all undefeated against some good competition. Brad Hill had an outstanding tournament with a 6-0 record that included one tech fall and five pins. His five pins were in 1:33, 1:13, :56, :39, and :31.

Easton Fleshman competed in a tournament where he received three forfeits before winning his only match by a decision. Jace Rhodes won the 132 lbs. title at the Flanigan Invitational. Ben Kueter was dominating in winning the Jack Mendenhall Invitational with two pins and a tech fall. Drake Rhodes won the La Prowse Invitation with three pins and a tech fall.

The Iowa Hawkeyes will face #24 Purdue on Sunday, January 9 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 2 PM. Purdue is coached by former Iowa Hawkeye Tony Erslund. The potential is there for five matches that will involve ranked wrestlers. 

The biggest match of ranked wrestlers will be #12 Kaleb Young –  #10 Kendall Coleman at 157 and #5 Jacob Warner – #15 Thomas Penola at 197.

Purdue looked real good last night defeating #6 Nebraska 18-15 at Nebraska. The match count was 5-5 but Purdue scored a tech fall at 125 (#5 Devin Schroder) and a major decision at 141 (#25 Parker Filius). At 184, #23 Max Lyon defeated #10 Tyler Ventz, 7-2. #10 Kendall Coleman did not wrestle at 157. This was the first Purdue win over a Top 10 ranked team since 2004 and the first for Coach Ersland.

It will be Military Appreciation Day for the Iowa-Purdue dual meet.

The Iowa-Purdue meet will be televised live on BTN and available at FoxSports.com and the Fox Sports mobile app.
